Clarence Hill's observations

A little this and that from camp:

1. Martellus Bennett is a baby beast. Don't know what went wrong at Texas A&M but this guy is big, athletic and talented. He will have a huge impact and a big part of the Cowboys offense this year.

2. Keep your fingers crossed but Terence Newman is looking good as ever. Of course, an injury could change things but Newman is healthy and poised to have a big year.

3. Defensive end Marcus Spears looks nimble and quick _ much more so than in the past. Nobody is predicting a Pro Bowl campaign. But he will be more active and should generate more sacks. That would be a good thing. Of course, it should be noted that he is in a contract year.

4. Bobby Carpenter is on the verge of shedding the "Barbie" label. And maybe the bust label too. Carpenter is a good guy and deserves some success.

5. Rookie cornerback Mike Mickens seems to be still bothered by a knee injury that sidelined him last season and forced him to drop in the draft. At this point, he will be hardpressed to make the final 53 although the Cowboys could stash him on the practice squad to allow him to develop.

6. Roy Williams is the No. 1 receiver. But he is in the best shape of his career and looks good. However, it has not translated on the field. He and Tony Romo are not making daily highlights. Williams is not worried. He thinks the ball will start coming to him when the Cowboys start playing games and is an offical part of the game plan.

7. The Cowboys should be and are very concerned about depth on the offensive line. If something happened to tackle Flozell Adams, Leonard Davis will be moved to left tackle and Montrae Holland would replace him at guard. The problem is that none of the players the Cowboys drafted over the past few years _ namely Pat McQuistan and Doug Free _ seem ready to step up and step in if needed.

8. There remains some concern at backup nose tackle behind Jay Ratliff. Junior Siavii and Jonas Seawright have yet to flash. The good news is that Tim Andeson, who has been sidelined since May following toe surgery, could be back by the end of the week or early next week.

9. Jon Kitna is as good as advertised, meaning he is a legitimate backup quarterback and should be able to help the Cowboys win games if something happened to Tony Romo. He is a huge upgrade over Brad Johnson. Remember Kitna has never been on a team with this many weapons. And he has looked good throwing the ball and making plays against the Cowboys first team defense in practice.

10. Mat McBriar is back and punting the ball better than ever after being sidelined last season with a broken foot. And make no mistake about it, the new Cowboys stadium is not McBriar proof. He will hit that massive digital video board with a punt or two this season. If he does, it will be classified as a dead ball and the play will be run over. Let's just hope its not too many times in a row.

You really can't say enough about Bennett. He's going to be something else. I cannot wait to see him in games this year.

The news regarding Free and Mcquinstin is frustrating to say the least.

I hope Dallas finds some more help from somewhere for this year.

Anyone that pretends that they could judge O-line based on training camp is fooling himself.

Dallas has really missed with their offensive line draft picks... Next year I expect them to draft a LT in either the 1st or 2nd round.

I have faith that the startilng OL can be "adequate",,, but if any of them go down with injury it's going to be ugly.

Romo would be better served if he went back to the scrambling QB style of 2 years ago rather than the stay-in-the-pocket and get clobbered style he was trying last year,,,

Over the weekend there was a report that Mickens was doing well and earned the nickname, "Sticky Micky"! Now he may not make the '53' and get placed on the practice squad? Clarence Hill is ... I don't know? No way Mickens make it through waivers!

You just can't. They're not going 100%. Defenders aren't allowed to get close to the QB and the linemen know it, so they don't go 100%. It's very obvious when you see them in camp.

I hear you,,, for some reason I kept misreading your post and it didn't make sense to me. Either that or you edited it and added a word that wasn't there before!

good point. I'd also add that this defense led the league in sacks last year. They made more than a few o-lineman look bad. I know these backup guys have not been ready to contribute in the past, but I'm hoping at least someone looks serviceable in the pre-season games.

You're not going crazy. I misspelled a word that made the whole thing not make sense.

wouldnt it be better to hope that a guy like Doug Free really develops this season?

and just fyi, just because an OL is drafted in the 1st or 2nd rd doesnt mean the guy will be a great, or even solid NFL player

the best OL in football from 1991-1995 had one guy chosen before the 3rd round on it...and that guy wasnt on either of the first two championship teams

LT should be higher round picks...

And even if we go looking, anyone added to the mix now will face a difficult time learning the scheme and players.

I hate all the OL draft snafus like everyone else, but all we can do is keep trying in the future while trying to find the flaw in our scouting method.

Leonard Davis is threatening to get below 350, a weight he hasn't visited since playing high school ball. Bigg is our long term option if Flozell Adams goes on IR with an injury.

And if Davis has to move, I'd be comfortable with Montrae Holland filling in at right guard. But that leaves you with two new starters on the line instead of just one, no coaching staff smiles at having to go that route.

If it's only for a game or two, Doug Free may show enough during pre-season to get a chance as a short term option.

Maybe someone else will show up in August, OL depth should be easy to churn.

You mean like Mark Tuinei, who was actually drafted as a DL? Oh wait, he wasnt drafted at all was he?

Pat Donovan was another outstanding LT for us, he was a 4th rd pick.

He had a few breakups and a nice diving interception, but he has also been toasted several times and has looked lost at others. Overall he has shown a lot of potential, but may be victim of the numbers game.

If Mickens doesn't make the roster, we must have the greatest depth of CBs in the league.

Roy Miller instead of Brewster and we would have had our backup NT....especially now that brewster is done for the year.

I have no idea why we suck at drafting OL.....i say instead of drafting and wasting 3-4 years on these scrubs, lets just sign FA OL......I prefer the draft, but that hasnt really worked out for us all that well over the last decade.

Unfortunately, the true stud offensive linemen never hit the market until they're past their prime.

Unless you hit on a cheapo team who can't or won't pay their players - like Buffalo and Jason Peters, but that's a rarity.

Most of the time, when a team gets a 'franchise' tackle, they treat them as such.

But at this point, I'd settle for 'capable' over this team's backups.

Still holding out hope for Free though.....
