Clarence Hill's observations
A little this and that from camp:
1. Martellus Bennett is a baby beast. Don't know what went wrong at Texas A&M but this guy is big, athletic and talented. He will have a huge impact and a big part of the Cowboys offense this year.
2. Keep your fingers crossed but Terence Newman is looking good as ever. Of course, an injury could change things but Newman is healthy and poised to have a big year.
3. Defensive end Marcus Spears looks nimble and quick _ much more so than in the past. Nobody is predicting a Pro Bowl campaign. But he will be more active and should generate more sacks. That would be a good thing. Of course, it should be noted that he is in a contract year.
4. Bobby Carpenter is on the verge of shedding the "Barbie" label. And maybe the bust label too. Carpenter is a good guy and deserves some success.
5. Rookie cornerback Mike Mickens seems to be still bothered by a knee injury that sidelined him last season and forced him to drop in the draft. At this point, he will be hardpressed to make the final 53 although the Cowboys could stash him on the practice squad to allow him to develop.
6. Roy Williams is the No. 1 receiver. But he is in the best shape of his career and looks good. However, it has not translated on the field. He and Tony Romo are not making daily highlights. Williams is not worried. He thinks the ball will start coming to him when the Cowboys start playing games and is an offical part of the game plan.
7. The Cowboys should be and are very concerned about depth on the offensive line. If something happened to tackle Flozell Adams, Leonard Davis will be moved to left tackle and Montrae Holland would replace him at guard. The problem is that none of the players the Cowboys drafted over the past few years _ namely Pat McQuistan and Doug Free _ seem ready to step up and step in if needed.
8. There remains some concern at backup nose tackle behind Jay Ratliff. Junior Siavii and Jonas Seawright have yet to flash. The good news is that Tim Andeson, who has been sidelined since May following toe surgery, could be back by the end of the week or early next week.
9. Jon Kitna is as good as advertised, meaning he is a legitimate backup quarterback and should be able to help the Cowboys win games if something happened to Tony Romo. He is a huge upgrade over Brad Johnson. Remember Kitna has never been on a team with this many weapons. And he has looked good throwing the ball and making plays against the Cowboys first team defense in practice.
10. Mat McBriar is back and punting the ball better than ever after being sidelined last season with a broken foot. And make no mistake about it, the new Cowboys stadium is not McBriar proof. He will hit that massive digital video board with a punt or two this season. If he does, it will be classified as a dead ball and the play will be run over. Let's just hope its not too many times in a row.
