With the Cowboys meeting with the agent for potential free agent Chris Canty today, it's time to get ready for the idea that Canty is gone.

Even if the Cowboys draft a defensive end in April, chances are the starter at Canty's defensive end position is on the roster right now. At least, that's what the Cowboys believe.

The top candidate is third-year player Jason Hatcher. In 46 games, he has 59 tackles and 5.5 sacks. He was a bit (maybe a lot) raw coming into the NFL out of Grambling in 2006. Hatcher had been backing up Marcus Spears at the other end position

The other candidate is Stephen Bowen, who was Canty's backup. Undrafted out of Hofstra, he's played in 31 games and has 32 tackles with one sack.

we will be hurting at DE this year.
we will be fine with 2 or 3 young guys looking to prove themselves worthy of being a starter.

How about we hire the local homeless bum on the corner... I'm pretty sure he would love to get a contract and would strive to "prove" himself as a worthy starter.... Does that mean he'll be good?

Hatcher and Bowen have both showed some good things. add a another young guy through the draft and all 3 will push each other harder knowing they have a shot to be a starter. you act like Canty was something special.

Nice strawman.

Maybe you should actually try to counter his point?

If Kenechi Udeze is cleared medically (diagnosed with leukemia 2 years ago) he could be a low cost option. At the least he could platoon with Jason Hatcher.

Both have shown flashes I agree. But does that make either capable of replacing Canty?

I'm completely fine with Hatcher and Bowen plantooning that DE spot..or maybe a NT with Rat moving over. We are in better shape than some people think.

No, I was referring to the ignorant statement that anybody in this entire draft is better than either of these guys, who are into their third years or whatever.

It's not like they are trying to replace an all-pro.

It's all pointless anyways, if the Cowboys land a NT Ratliff will be replacing Canty.

So, you think a rookie like Sammie Lee Hill (your 5th rd pick) should be a starter then?

Showing flashes is the definition of a being a journeyman player. I am with Parcels on this debate, after 3 years in the league you are pretty much all you are ever gonna be.

Those are good numbers for a part time back up DE in a 3-4. Getting more reps, in 3rd and 4rth season, these guys haven't even peeked yet, they have nothing but upside. Bring in a rookie and watch there production go up, nothing like competition to light a fire under your hiney. No worries here.
