"NT Tank Johnson is playing like the beast that he calls himself right now. He had PBU on a pass that hit him in the chest during the two-minute drill."

If Tank plays really well then do we have a chance to keep him next
season?

Good question. I was wondering this myself along with daydreaming about Ware, Hamlin, Canty being signed to long term deals. As I said in another thread, maybe the losses of Kosier, Colombo, R. Williams (yeah I said it), Spears, and a trade of Henry might be the way that JJ gets some additional cap room to resign those three and Tank if he does really well.

What's it going to be then, eh?

So no safety can cover a TE ... and no safety can cover a WR ... exactly who do safeties cover? And why on earth would anyone draft one highly or spend big money for one since they seemingly don't do anything? Sounds like your 4th CB deserves more money than your starting safety ... he certainly has a harder job.

That is something I have learned in recent months.

No safety should even be expected to cover anyone.

All they really should do is just be a nice person and sometimes support the run effectively.

But even in run support, they shouldn't be asked to take on and shed blockers like LB's are asked to. They should be allowed to just freelance and run freely to the ball with no responsibilities while all the front 7 players do all the dirty work for them.

Being an NFL safety sounds like a pretty sweet gig.

Woodson didn't suit up in the game last year in dallas and Harris was mostly on TO.

however, Austin did get open some in that game.

Youre right he was toasting their third corner over and over again.

Many safeties actually do cover and provide that last line of defense. It is just that Roy sucks compared to the other safeties in the league.

The notion that you don't want a strong safety in one-on-one man coverage is new to you?

Maybe we should start with something more simple.

This is a football.

Ah yes the "But ... but .. but ... he's a STRONG safety, so it's okay for him to be useless" argument. Funny, I don't see nearly as many teams differentiate between their strong and free safety as much as the Roy Williams fans do. And again, why on earth would you ever draft one highly or spend money on them when they don't do anything?

Frankly, I don't know why we don't just sit Roy on the bench and let Kevin Burnett play in his spot instead. Might as well get a 240 lbs guy who could occasionally take on a blocker in run support and/or run over a 190 lbs. running back on a blitz to do the same job.

And FWIW, not all "strong safeties" are incompetent in coverage. Darren Woodson actually moved to slot in the nickel in the nickel, as did Lawyer Milloy. It's only the David Fulchers and Adam Archuletta's of the NFL that are completely useless in coverage.

You must be assuming that I'm conceding the point that he's not as good in coverage as his peers. Clearly, I am not.

But I can see how you'd want to move the goal post in the conversation to something other than the silly statement that I pointed out.
