Thanksgiving game announced Monday
The NFL is expected to release some of the nationally televised games this season, including the Cowboys' Thanksgiving Day opponent. The Cowboys will host an NFC team on Thanksgiving this season. It could be the Bears. The Saints most likely will travel to Cowboys Stadium for a December game if the league continues to back load the Cowboys' opponents to guarantee high TV ratings late in the season.

The Cowboys also could learn who their opening day opponent will be.

I might have missed the discussion earlier, but this is the first time I've seen this rationale used for why our December schedules are always so ridiculously tough.

Me too. It makes sense though when you think about it from a ratings standpoint. Let's hope the Cowboys rise to the occasion.

Guessing Washington as Cowboys' Thanksgiving Day opponent

Later today the NFL is expected to announce the opening week primetime games as well as the Thanksgiving Day lineup from the NFL Owners Meetings in Orlando.

We know the New York Giants will play a home game in their new stadium on the opening week, while the Jets will play on Monday Night Football. Last week we guessed the Cowboys would be the opponent for the Giants, returning the favor from last year when New York opened Cowboys Stadium. And the Cowboys opened up the Meadowlands in 1976, too.

As for the Thanksgiving Day foe, I'm thinking it will be an NFC East opponent. New Orleans, Chicago and Detroit visit Cowboys Stadium this year for the non-division NFC games. You guys set me straight on New Orleans on a blog post last season when it came to playing the Saints. The NFL knows it will get ratings on Thanksgiving regardless of the opponent, so I'd rule out the Saints. I'm thinking that will be another NFL Network game in December. Detroit has its own Thanksgiving Day game, so the Lions are out. Chicago visited here in 2004, so I wouldn't think it would be the Bears.

That leaves the Giants, Washington and Philadelphia. Of the three, I'd say Washington is the best guess. The Cowboys are 6-0 on the holiday against the Commanders. The last time they played a divisional rival on Thanksgiving it was Washington, a 27-20 victory on Nov. 28, 2002.

But Mike Shanahan is 2-0 against the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. The new Commanders coach beat the Cowboys, 24-21, in 2005 and, 26-24, in 2001 with Denver.
