Ware's negotiations

The Cowboys' top priority this off-season was getting outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware signed to a long-term deal. Ware is entering the final season of his rookie deal.

Ware's price went up when the Washington Commanders signed defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth to a record $41 million in guarantees.

"He's obviously a top defensive player and has played like one," Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said of Ware. "I'm sure [Ware and his agent] have got their eye on [Haynesworth's deal]."

He's the only player that I can honestly say in a long time deserves the money... I would like to see him be more vocal with team mates.

I am kind of surprised that the deal has not been done already.

He's certainly worth it and I hope they just get it done pretty soon and get that part of it over with and move onto the next part of the offseason stuff.

Lots of things at play, Brain.

#1 is the Haynesworth contract screwed things up. Numbers were probably there, but the structure wasn't. Haynesworth deal changed the numbers.

I am not worried.

They have never lost anyone they really wanted to keep.

newman has been hurt the past 2 years and hasnt earned his moneys worth
flozell adams sure hasnt
greg ellis hasnt
leonard davis hasnt
hamlin sure didnt last year
neither has barber last year

so we do need to get ware signed,

could be waiting until after the draft. Not because they will draft someone, but to see exactly what they will need under the cap for the draft picks. Then negotiate from there.

I'm sure they exchanged some kind of informal proposal's. Even if just verbal, or written on a napkin. Well, you get the idea.

Wow, Haynesworth deal? Whoever his agent it, he should be fired. Not that Ware isn't worth it but because those contracts are stupid.

The Nate Clements, Deangelo Hall, Haynesworth contracts are nothing but ego strokers.

They look all big and sound great but those guys will NEVER sniff anything near that total amount. Just a showoff move really.

Honestly, I expected and still expect Ware to get the Newman treatment. Less total money but a higher total that is realistically obtainable.

No way in hell will the Jones' dole out a contract that gives them no option but to release the guy 4 years down the road because the number would be unreal to even consider paying.

I honestly hope that Ware doesn't feel like he needs to shoot for the record books. From what I have seen about him character wise, I doubt he does but dollar signs do funny things to people.

Haynesworth agent is employed by Haynesworth why would he want to fire a man who just got him that type of cash? I agree the money now days is mind blowing but from an agents perspective he did an outstanding job representing his client and other players will want to use that agent as well

Yeah, seriously. What is taking so long? Unless Ware has decided he wants to try his hand as a free agent or something.

Besides possible cap implications, I don't see where all the urgency is coming from. He still has a year left and then the Boys can always still franchise him. If Ware would be insulted by that and pout, then maybe he isn't worth a mega-contract.

If he wants the big money then he has to offset getting paid now versus risking a major injury before hitting Free Agency. I think getting a deal done now is good for both sides, but neither side holds a sledgehammer.

Dont forget guys that unless a new CBA is agreed to WARE WILL NOT BE A FREE AGENT!!!

For the uncapped year of 2010, players with 6 seasons completed are UFA (instead of the normal 4 years now).

So we would not even need to franchise Ware because he is not going to be a free agent at all, he has only 4 seasons completed.

Ware has a year left at a cheap price. Haynesworth was unrestricted, and basically got a 4 year $48M contract.

Jones has leverage. I'd use that leverage. If Ware expects to negotiate as though he were a UFA, then let it play out. He's not a UFA if there's no new cba, and he can be franchised if there is.

I'm sick of Cowboy players - Newman, Adams, MBIII, Romo, TO, Hamlin - getting big $$$ and then being less productive than they were before. I hope Jones has learned his lesson.

If Ware and his agent want to play hardball, Jones should oblige them.

if Ware wants 100+ million than franchise him and trade him. Jerry has to stop being a charity for players giving everybody huge contracts.
