The Miami Cowboys - A Look Back

With the Dolphins' season ending on Sunday in a blowout home playoff loss against the Ravens, it's a good time to look back at the impact the Cowboys had on Miami's shocking 11-5 record.

Here is a look at the former Cowboys who were listed on the Dolphins' roster:

FB Lousaka Polite. Bill Parcells cut and re-signed this guy about six times. Give "Louie" this - he didn't quit.

TE Anthony Fasano. The Fish traded for the former second-round pick last April. Fasano started 16 games for the Fish this season and had a career-high 34 catches for 454 yards and seven touchdowns.

Would you rather have Fasano or Matellus Bennett?

NT Jason Ferguson. The massive road block started in 13 games for the Dolphins and had 22 tackles. He was never going to beat out Jay Ratliff.

LB Akin Ayodele. Ayodele started 13 games and had 75 tackles with two interceptions and no sacks.

Would you rather have had Ayodele or Zach Thomas?

DB Nate Jones. Played in 16 games and had 23 tackles and one interception.

Of all the ex-Cowboys turned current Fish, not including coaches, the one that got away may be Fasano.

Who cares about the mullets, they're finished. Next season will be back to reality when they play the AFC South and the NFC south. 6-10 next year for the mullets.

I'd take Fergie every day of the week over Tank. I'm not even sure Tank played football this year.

Fasano certainly had his best season, and had a several good games. But he had a stretch of 9 straight games where he amassed a total of 180 yards (about 20 yards per game) for 1 TD.

Plus, in an offense with a popgun-armed QB that presumably would like to throw to a tight end, the only game where he cracked the 70-yard mark came in the season opener where he had 84 yards. The only other time he cracked the 50-yard mark came in the third game of the season with 66 yards.

His next-best games were a pair of 47-yard efforts -- the only other times he bested the 40-yard plateau.

Decent player, but certainly not The One That Got Away and a guy that, as a backup, didn't complement Witten that well; certainly not like Martellus did in the first year of his career.

Yeah, Mac missed the point. It wasn't Fergy or Ratliff. It was if we kept Fergy, we could have moved Jay to the outside.

Jay on the outside is not a good idea, not sure why people keep insisting he be moved out there still after what he did this season.

Our ends aren't there to penetrate, they take up blockers to free the lb's to work. Rat would not be nearly as disruptive at the end position.

Speaking of the AFC East, does anyone think that the Jet's implosion was as bad as the Boy's implosion?

Cowboys = Jets of the NFC

Granted, the main responsibility of 3-4 defensive ends is to help eat up blocks, allow linebackers to more freely flow to the ball and shut down the run. However, nose tackles do exactly that every game and Ratliff was no different, but he also penetrated into the backfield very well. Moving him to defensive end would be an upgrade over Marcus Spears, who is very solid against the run, but who doesn't rush the quarterback well when those rare opportunities present themselves.

Damn right I'd rather have Fasano over Bennett.

Bennett may be younger and more athletic and with size but Fasano seems to show a toughness and grit that Bennett may take years to get.
In a crunch, I'd rather rely on Fasano than Martellus.

Bennett over Fasano by a mile. Better blocker, better receiver, better football player.

Ayodele vs. a hall of famer?

And Ferguson would have spent as much time on the bench as Tank, so who cares.

the Cowboys could have used the pick on Bennett on a WR... in hindsight I would rather have Fasano and (Jerrys pick) a rookie WR from the second round in the 08 draft...

But lets not forget Jerry got a draft pick for Fasano and Fergy... ppl say he is a great GM.

The frustration over Fasano to me is not that he is gone but that he was traded for peanuts.

Considering we led the league in sacks, I'm not sure how much disruption you can ask for right now.

I don't think there's a sacred position on this team though, so what the hell, why not try it.

You're making it sound like the decision to rush the QB is on the fly though, which isn't the case.

Not really. I'm referring to the rare occasions when it's a passing situation, Spears beat his blockers and didn't get good pressure on the quarterback. In my opinion, Ratliff would've done a slightly better job during those sparse opportunities.

The reason the fish turned it around:
Signing Pennington - 50%
Parcells and the rest of the Cowboys coaches - 40%
Former Cowboys players 5%
other - 5%

Phillips 3-4 is all about flexibility involving the players. Not sure where you have ever heard that our ends are "not there to penetrae, but to take on blockers"

If anything, that is the NT role. Ratliff working on the outside would have more room to work with, and in my opinion, be more effective, especially teaming up with Ware or Ellis/Spencer on the outside.

Remember in preseason we tried Ratliff at end, he said himself he did not like playing end he preferred playing in the middle where he was more comfortable
