Yeah, Mac missed the point. It wasn't Fergy or Ratliff. It was if we kept Fergy, we could have moved Jay to the outside.

You don't pay 7+ mil for a backup NT.

Jay Ratliff wasn't starting over Canty or Spears when he played DE.

Fergy was a money move.

The reason the fish turned it around:
Signing Pennington - 50%
Parcells and the rest of the Cowboys coaches - 40%
Former Cowboys players 5%
other - 5%

45% Pennington
30% BP and Sparano
15% Easy schedule
10% Talent other than QB upgrades including draft and former Cowboy acquisitions.

while i agree that it was a money move, ferg wasn't making 7+ mil. 11.5 mil of his 21.5 mil contract was paid in the first 2 years already.

the move only saved us 2.4 against the cap. that's a 1.5 mil savings if we had cut "the beast" instead. not worth it IMO.

i'll take ferg off of a bicep injury over canty or spears. ferg is above average at NT. spears and canty are average at DE.

Ratliff, Ferg, Spears or Canty is >> Spears, Ratliff, Canty IMO.

and on passing downs you could move Ratliff to NT and rest Ferg.

Ferg played 3 years here and was healthy only 1 of them. Canty and Spears are still improving and both have been healthy their entire tenures here.

At worst case the Boys saved 1.4 mil as you note and since I don't have the numbers I'll gladly grant them to you, that 1.4 mil was clearly for a backup NT position.

You don't pay an extra 1.4 for the backup NT.

Our starter made the Pro Bowl, btw.

Bottom line is everyone is a genius after the fact.
Anyone with sense would have moved Fergy last year if given a chance.

Fasano wasn't very good in Dallas and for whatever reason, turned into a good player in Miami. Kudos to him for working his butt off and turning his career around. However, Bennett was more effective (IMO) this year than Fasano ever was in Dallas. And it's fair to say that Bennett has worlds of potential. And if we can keep John Garrett around (great TE coach) and get a little more creative offensively, we could finally get that innovative 2 TE offense that we were hoping for back when we drafted Fasano.

wow...why the need to have such a cynical attacking tone to your post? i'm sorry i'm debating you on this topic when i should just realize your brilliance.

we'll have to agree to disagree because of several points.
-you do pay that extra money when you don't need to use it for anything else (we had 6.5 mil of unused cap space this year)
-he would not have been a backup...ratliff would have been moved to DE instead.
-i could give a rats arse about probowls because i believe in team play versus individual recognition and i believe a DL of rat/ferg/spears or canty is way more stout and better in every way than our 2008 DL.
-bottom line is many people including myself were bashing the trade when it happened on all the boards, not just now
-anyone with sense realizes that giving up a good starter for a 6th round draft pick is not value. **and to add to that, we used the pick on erik walden who we didn't even keep...so we got nothing but 1.5 million cap space we didn't use out of the deal.
-and at the worst! if ferg gets injured again (you pointed out his injury history), you are left with the same DL we had this year anyway.

** here is the link i found for his cap hit.....

Lousaka Polite was extremely effective in short yardage situations this season. Their conversion pct. on 3rd and 1 when they gave it to Polite was unbelievable.

Trading Jason Ferguson was a big mistake.

Fasano for Bennett is a who cares, deal. I think Miami would rather have Bennett, tbh.

Ayodele made more plays than Zach Thomas this season. That's just a fact, and I was a way bigger fan of bringing in Thomas than keeping Ayodele.

Bennett over Fasano by a mile. Better blocker, better receiver, better football player.

Ayodele vs. a hall of famer?

And Ferguson would have spent as much time on the bench as Tank, so who cares.
who played better this year?
