On the other hand, I feel a 4th round comp coming :)

and if he were to make the pro bowl, I believe it could be as high as a 3rd.

This is the rule as defined by the NFL...

"compensatory picks," are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick. If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft (These are known as "supplemental compensatory selections").
Compensatory picks are awarded each year at the NFL annual meeting which is held at the end of March; typically, about three or four weeks before the draft.

Between Canty and Burnett, we could potentially have an extra 3rd round and 4th round comp pick.

Possibly... but just to clarify, compensation for FA lost this year would not come until the 2010 draft.

I think the Nickle LB position that Dallas was going to look to feel via the draft. So it did'nt make any sense to pay Burnett starter money to be a backup. I think Burnett is a good player, I just think he struggle with staying healthy as a backup, so it is hard to depend on him being a starter.

That's true.

But I was thinking, that IF JJ needed an extra 4th or 5th rounder this year, for example, to move up in the Draft or whatever, he could always use our 4th from next year. We couldn't trade the comp pick from next year, but we could trade our own pick from next year.

Not saying JJ will do this, but rather it gives him a bit more flexibility to move up in the Draft in the mid-rounds if he needs to.

I don't understand this thinking... Or at least don't agree with it.

I don't want to over pay him but he should have been locked up after playing inside last year ahead of Zack Thomas now we are paying the price. He should have been given the option and draft a back up last year now we are in the same position and seem to be making the same mistake all over again.

Which scares me. We have 11 picks this year, he is going to be able to target players. This will either be a very good draft for us, or another clunker - there is no middle ground with this franchise.

Merriman might not be back in San Diego

Where did you hear or read that? Unless the dude retires suddenly, maybe cause he couldn't comeback from his injury, I highly doubt he's leaving San Diego anytime soon.

No doubt but how man millions is enough?

I just don't know if it is worth a couple extra million to go to a team that has far less of a shot to win.

Of course that really only means something for players who will make many millions a year.

For Kev, he could probably hope for 4 at most.

Far less shot? Dude the Chargers are closer than we are to winning a Superbowl, and have been for a couple years now. He'd be leaving a team who hasn't proven in 13 years that they can win in December or January for a team that has won in the playoffs these last two seasons, getting to the AFC title game just two seasons ago.

So if he can get more money, and a better shot at the Superbowl to boot, I can't see how anyone could blame him.

I may be completely off on this, but it appears to me that there is a sweet spot in this Draft mid/end of Round 3 to early/mid Round 5.

There aren't really as many top playmakers like perhaps in other drafts at QB, RB, or WR (excluding Crabtree), but there seem to be a lot of interesting players in the mid rounds.

Again, just my guess.

Definitely. A couple more guys like Choice and Scandrick from those rounds and we'll be a very deep and talented squad.

I just know we need serious ILB/SS/NT, and Jerry likes to reach. Thats how you get Shante Carver... If a great WR is still on the board (like D. Jackson last year) - take him.

3 years ago. They followed that up with I believe a 11-5 or 10-6 year in which they got all the way to the AFC Title game (Won the Wildcard round and then went to Indy and knocked them off) and then last year they won the Wildcard round again and got beaten in the divisional round.

The 14-2 and one and done was Marty's last year there.

In the last two postseasons alone they've accomplished more than we have since the 1995/1996 season.

None of that means nothing since they didn't win.....but whatever.

I would love the Eagles to start Shaun Andrews at left tackle. Herremans too. King Dunlap would be even better.

So now playoff wins don't mean anything cause they didn't win a Superbowl? So if Dallas finally breaks their playoff win drought and wins a playoff game or two this year you're going to balk cause they didn't win the Superbowl?

And my response was to the fact that it was mentioned that he would have a better shot of winning a championship here which, in recent years, hasn't even been close to the truth. The Chargers have come far closer than we have most recently.

That's all. I just think if a guy is signing by who might give him the better shot at a championship this season, or next, that most everyone would pick the Chargers over us cause they've proven they can win in December and January as of late, where as we have not.
