Here are 10 quick hits from the Cowboys first day in pads:

1. Joseph Randle is a blur hitting the holes. He may have spoken out of turn with the “meat on the bone” comment. But was not off base in thinking he will rip off more big gainers than DeMarco Murray behind the Cowboys offensive line. He certainly gets the line of scrimmage and into the secondary much faster than Murray.

2. The Cowboys held receiver Dez Bryant out of one-on-one drills as a precaution, but they didn’t waste time going deep to him. Tony Romo threw four go routes to Bryant in team and 7-on-7 drills. They connected on just one, beating cornerback Orlando Scandrick. But it was certainly an example of the Cowboys planning to stretch the field more with Bryant.

“That’s just getting into the mix of things,” Bryant said. “It felt good running after the ball like that. The 9-route is fun. It’s the best route of the game. The best route in the playbook.”

Bryant added: “I was just knocking the rest off that’s all. You know I’m saying that as a joke though. It’s really no rust.”

3. Cornerback Morris Claiborne had a good first day. He didn’t go through one-on-one drills,

The most interesting development of the day happened on the last team drill when Hardy slid to the three-technique tackle spot next to defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford with second-year pro DeMarcus Lawrence and rookie Randy Gregory at ends.

Some of us members on the board were talking about this before, really like that idea. That will be my madden setup :D

Last season LB was the strength and D-line was the weakness, now it maybe the opposite this year.

Good stuff. Articles like this so much better than tweets.
One line tweets may be good for play by play type stuff at times, or for roster moves.
But this is the real reporting.
Though Clarence Hill has his mediot moments, can't mess up this type reporting...LOL....
Always appreciated WG.

I wouldn't call LB a weakness, but I understand what you mean. Say, DL could be stronger this year vs LB than last year of LB stronger vs DL.
But when McClain gets back in game 5, with Lee and Hitchins, it will be pretty good. But then again, Hardy returns also. Nice dilemma to have to debate....:D....

So far, so good, with Mo Claiborne looking like the warrior that he used to be at LSU. Perhaps he'll work out OK, at least as long as he's able to avoid that nasty old injury bug. ~crossing arms, fingers and toes~

Anyone hear any reports on how Darren McFadden looked? Did he hit the hole with the burst he flashed a few times in Oakland?

Haha..

Number ten is the best, IMO. Finally. Fiiinnally.........thank you Jesus.

You just continue being a fantastic owner jerry. That's all we want.

I find it kind of sad in a way. Jerry built this empire of success and wealth. Stephen Jones was born into Jerry's success. Now every change the media gets they like to rub Jerry's face in the fact that Father Time catches up with every one of us. I have a ton of respect for Jerry and hope Stephen can become the man Jerry is. There is a reason people like Dion Sanders and Mike Irvin are so loyal to Jerry. Without Jerry I doubt we would have dez Bryant, Collins, and Hardy.

Jerry Jones just had hip replacement surgery and the second one is upcoming when the team returns to Texas.

Odd that Clarence Hill felt it unnecessary to add that factoid in his report.

Randall was good in limited action last year. If they rotate backs and Randall stays fresh he could be a force this year.

The philosophy for the zone scheme regarding RBs is, "patient to the hole, fast through the hole." That seems to be Randle's forte.

Randle is a talented RB. It's not like we pulled him off the scrap heap. He'll be a good player if they can keep him in that 16-18 carries/game range. My only real concern is how effective will the running game be when he's on the bench.

Randle is a talented RB.

Joseph Randle was the 67th rated prospect on Dallas 2013 draft board, which had him at the bottom of the third round, one spot ahead of DE Damontre Moore, the last player the team had graded in that frame.

Randle had the fifth highest grade among running backs that year.

Giovanni Bernard (30th overall) and Eddie Lacey (38th overall) carried second round grades, while Montee Ball (41st overall) and Le'Veon Bell (53rd overall) had higher third round grades than Randle.
