exas – Did the Cowboys leave too much time for Aaron Rodgers in the final minute and change Sunday?

The answer, clearly, was yes after Rodgers drove the Packers 75 yards in 1:02 for the deciding touchdown in a stunning 35-31 comeback win at AT&T Stadium.

Monday, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett emphasized the offense did its best to play keep-away from Green Bay’s star quarterback on its final scoring drive of the game, but not above the top priority: erasing a four-point deficit.

“The objective in the situation is to score a touchdown first,” Garrett said, “and you try to bleed as much time off the clock as you can in that process.”

Quarterback Dak Prescott executed an 11-yard zone-read run for a touchdown with 1:13 remaining to put the Cowboys ahead, 31-28. The score capped a 17-play drive that ate 8:43 off the clock.

The Cowboys had to grind out yards just to get in position for Prescott’s touchdown run. In Garrett’s mind, they weren’t going to burn time off the clock at the expense of scoring opportunities solely on the assumption that they would eventually reach the end zone.

bottom line is this team is in big trouble if offense has to consistently hide defense from big boy situations.

We're in pretty big trouble then because we are 5 games into the season and have very few options to fix all the holes this defense has.
Get ready for an 8x8 or 9x7 season and hopefully a wild card playoff game. Marrinelli is what he is at this stage and he isn't going to change much because he doesn't have the horses to change.

8 yd run on first down, so, hey, let's try to throw a pass! we will 100 % score and if not, the clock still goes, right?

unreal...the run game was beating up GB, Zeke gets 8 yds on first down, RUN THE BALL, get the first down, the clock runs...punch it in one or two plays later with 30 seconds left

Typical mealy mouth answer from him.

Just admit the play call was probably a mistake and move on. It's not that hard, Jason. His rational about how Prescott had three TDs on short passes earlier in the game is just a mind numbingly silly answer because it fails to really take into account the timing of those TDs and the fact none were as low percentage as a corner fade.

And as Wood said, we are in trouble if we have to protect the D but frankly that's the reality. You have to constantly worry about where and what situations this D will be put in. Marinelli is what he is and this defense is what it is. Oh he could play more man or blitz more but that's not going to really change things drastically. Real change will come this offseason when hopefully we look for a new DC and figure out a way to improve the talent on D.

Yep. Fans criticizing the game mgmt in that final sequence looking for perfection to mask our defense need to get a grip or leave their agendas against Garrett at the door .

The offense did their part with an impressive time consuming drive for the potential game winning TD. At some point we need a defense which can close games out or at least extend them.

Let's deal in realities.

The reality is our defense isn't very good. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. And I bet that even the most diehard Garrett defenders swallowed hard after Prescott's touchdown and realized Rodgers had over a minute left with a timeout. In a perfect world, sure, offense scores, defense shuts him down, we go home winners that day. But that's not what happened. What happened was utterly predictable.

A fade pass, at that point in the game, from that down and distance is a peculiar call at best, idiotic at worst. And guess what? The results of the game pretty much indicate that the wrong call was made there. That's the beauty of sports. At the end of the game, we have the final results and we can see how decisions the coaching staff affected the outcome.

Even if we had the 85 Bears defense, it still would have been a bad play call because....AARON RODGERS. You do whatever it takes to leave that man as little time as possible. I'm at point now where I'm starting to dislike Garrett personally.

I don’t understand all the hate for the playcall.

First things first, the Cowboys are down 4 points. And you have to score. And you have a great red zone threat in Dez. Should they have ran the ball? Probably. Was throwing it up to Dez an inherently bad playcall? I don’t think so. If I was coach it would have been a running play but I understand the call that was made.

#1 Priority there is scoring a TD. Worry about big, bad, scary Aaron Rodgers next.
