I'm uncomfortable with Collins at RT, but I have very little faith in Green staying healthy. The g/t we just signed makes me feel a little better, but I would like us to draft a tackle, at some point. Our O Line is our bread and butter, don't screw it up Jerry.
If Bell has to play tackle we better be prepared to double w a TE on passing downs.

They would be the 5 biggest $$$$$ on my team. I consider them that important....

Can't have a third of your salary cap on the oline. What about Dak when it's time. Dez. Lee. Zeke. Eventually we gonna hit on players the defensive side of the ball.

Well I look at it this way, A great line can make an average back great. It does not work the other way around. If you can't divide it equally then that's the way I'm gonna go.....

This is the direction the team has obviously wanted to go if they have their choice. They obviously like Green, but you have to be concerned about him staying in the lineup. If he goes down, with what Cooper and Bell can give you at LG, best bet might actually be to move Collins (assuming they give him reps at RT in camp). I don't like that, though, because Collins still needs work inside.

Let's hope Bell or Cleary or a rookie look good enough at OT that it's an easy decision.

Yup. It was obvious. We've had a lot of fans barking about Collins playing RT, but I never took that discussion seriously. Headed into next season we have one unsettled position along the line. That's not so bad. Green or Cooper or Cleary or even a draft pick is next up.

The fact that they tried him there for, what, a week his rookie camp and then moved him back to OG told you everything you needed to know about that move the last two years.

Now, if they move him in camp again, it's another story, but until now, it's been a non-issue.

I think it told us that we had enough tackles at the time

What it "told me" was that there was very little commitment to it. Honestly, what does a week's worth of practice tell you? If they pulled the plug on everything so quickly, nobody would ever succeed.

If anybody thinks that a week's worth of time for a rookie transition is adequate, they're flat out wrong.

The gold standard for a tackle is to have at least 34 inch arms. Collins has 33 1/4 inch arms. That's the guiding factor here. He will get beat around the edge more than you'd like because of that lost inch. Now that doesn't mean you wouldn't use him out there in a pinch, because the guy can play anywhere you stick him and do a decent job. It's great to have that flex. Same with Martin, the song remains the same. They are all-pro guards, pro bowl tackles, if you will.

After the year is over he will be top 10. His ceiling is much higher than Wilson or Cam (QB's who compare to Dak)

Yes, Garrett was not going to bench Free, so there was no incentive for the coaches to have Collins practice at RT.

This year, the best 5 OL would have Collins a LG and Green at RT; however, with Green's injury history, it would be wise to give Collins some reps at RT in training camp. They have Cooper as an option at OG and he looked decent in the game footage that I watched from his stint with Cleveland last season.

As a backup plan, Collins (with enough practice reps) at RT and Cooper at LG is probably better than Bell at RT and Collins at LG.

Leary only played because Collins was injured. Collins played okay his first year. I have no doubt he'll step back into the starter role with ease. He is a mauler.

1) do we actually know if Free has retired? I haven't seen the door shut on that yet
2) prefer collins at G, between the big boys who can support him better
3) one of the others will just have to man-up at RT if Free truly is gone

Note: love that we are talking more about "how can we keep the top OLine in the league", rather than, ugh, "we MUST go OLine early in the draft because we can't block for Zeke or Dak"

We still have Looney who could start at G and allow for some of guys with position flex such as Collins or Martin to start at Right Tackle. The key is to start the best 5 offensive linemen on your roster. This also depends on who we draft this year. If a plug and play Tackle or Guard lands in our lap then this scenario changes.

If they're not going to make a concerted effort to play Collins at right tackle, don't bother at all. Half-assing it doesn't do anyone any good. If it were to happen, Collins would need to be taking a lot of reps there from the get-go, and if he's not, it won't work. And, if that's the case, Cooper is a backup for sure and not a starting option.

Given Chaz Green's total lack of physical reliability, I think there should be as many other options for that spot as possible.

I don't think they do that at all.

I think the only reason Collins would get serious time at RT is if Chaz/Bell are both sucking or their are injury concerns involved and with Green that is a legit issue.

However like some were saying before and others did not like to hear it...Collins is here to play OG. IF he is not playing OG it is only because our two RTs are not cutting the mustard wither talent wise or due to injuries.

We were not going to keep Leary and Collins and have one of the top paid OTs in Smith, Cs in Beard and TWO of the top paid OGs in the game...and between this year and next...Z.Martin will be one of if not the top paid OG in the game.

I'd prefer to give Cooper a legitimate shot to win the starting LG spot. He showed in college that he has the talent. And if he was available, it sure sounds like he would have been Dallas' 1st round pick that year. I trust Cooper more than I trust Chaz Green to stay healthy. And I trust Collins to do a good job at RT more than I do Byron Bell, a guy who wasn't drafted.

Those are my personal preferences although they don't seem to align with what Garrett is saying. Then again, he'd still have Doug Free at RT if he had his way.
