Garrett on what kind of coach can thrive in Dallas

From the sound of Garrett's response, I get the impression that he's fed up with Jerry and his stubborn ways. Anyone who has gone through what he has should rightfully feel exactly that way. Jerry is in it for the personal glory that he'll never be able to achieve. He's totally unqualified to give his team success in the way that he obviously prefers. He's had many chances to prove himself as a GM and has failed way too often. It's past time to hire a capable GM with successful experience, if he wants to save his franchise from ongoing disaster. It's also his best chance to save face, imho.

I think he nailed it. To be successful the team's leadership needs to be aligned. We do not have that in Dallas because Jerry does not have a plan he sticks to. He operates on whims and other impulses. Going along with Jerry is not the same as being aligned.

The Cowboys don't know what they want to be. This is why they are inactive in the offseason. If they had a plan they would look for the players that will fulfill their vision. Instead, they just fill roster spots with the cheapest players available.

Even this recent mess with the HC. If Jerry had a plan, there would have been no hesitation at the end of the season. Either he would have fired McCarthy or given him an immediate extension. But Jerry is playing by his own rules and I am not sure everyone else in the organization knows what they are at all times.

I think the Cowboys approach the draft the same way. Winning teams look for players that fit their team's culture. They want certain types of players not just combine stars, or athletes.

I am preaching to the choir, but the problem starts at the top. McCarthy is a good HC, but he is limited by Jerry.

Next up on ESPN: interview with former Dallas Cowboys head coach who didn’t thrive asking him what it takes to thrive in Dallas
That depends upon your definition of thriving.

If you mean to win a championship, or anything of value then yes I would not call Garrett thriving.

But if by thriving you mean to bend to everything the owner wants and let him run all over you so you can be the head coach for a decade. Well then, Jason would be your guy.

One thing Garrett did right, was make millions of $$$. He dangled that carrot in front of Jerry each and every season, one day at a time. Poor JJ kept taking the bait and pulling up that dwarf goby fish .

Now that thur is exuberance!

JG did not reach the goal in Dallas despite being given more time than most; however, no one can argue that he hasn’t hit the nail on the head here. He’s basically saying the same thing that every other former player/coach/commentator has said—alignment of philosophy, culture, and player types has to be there from ownership to GM to coach and everyone else.

While many love to also harp on the fact that Jerry needs to change and step back, JG is simply answering honestly that Jerry is 82 and isn’t going to change, so a coach will have to embrace that and operate knowing how it is. We all know that’s true. Even Parcells had to play the game and give Jerry his FaceTime and talk positively about their working relationship, etc.
