Garrett trims field to Ravens, Cowboys
By Jamison Hensley | Sun reporter
January 17, 2008

Jason Garrett has narrowed his job choices to taking the Ravens' head coaching post or staying with the Dallas Cowboys and could decide today, an NFL source said last night.

Garrett, the Cowboys' offensive coordinator, also has been courted by the Atlanta Falcons for their head coaching vacancy.

After interviewing with the Ravens and the Falcons the past two days, Garrett flew back to Dallas last night to contemplate his future.

If Garrett turns down the Ravens, they will turn their attention to Philadelphia Eagles secondary coach John Harbaugh, the source said. The Ravens contacted Harbaugh over the weekend to notify him that they wanted a second meeting, but the interview had not been scheduled as of last night.

Harbaugh, though, could be in Baltimore for an afternoon meeting because he is only a two-hour drive away.

Harbaugh, 45, has never been a head coach at any level but impressed the Ravens in his Jan. 8 visit.

The Ravens presumably want to name a coach by the end of the week.

Former Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan and veteran head coach Marty Schottenheimer are no longer being considered by the Ravens, the source said.

If Garrett is no longer in the running in Atlanta, the Falcons could hire Ryan, who has been a favorite of owner Arthur Blank's.

Ravens officials tried to hire Garrett on Monday, visiting with him for seven hours. It is believed they talked to him about a four-year deal.

One league source said indications are Garrett could be leaning toward staying with Dallas.

Knowing his support from owner Jerry Jones, Garrett could eventually succeed head coach Wade Phillips. But giving Garrett a hefty raise could complicate matters in Dallas.

To keep Garrett with the Cowboys, Jones might have to pay Garrett as much as - or perhaps even more than - Phillips, who reportedly makes about $3 million a season.

According to The Dallas Morning News, Jones met with Garrett last night.

I wouldn't touch the Falcons or Ravens jobs. One is an aging team that has name players who are beloved who are no longer producing at the levels of their legend. The other is a poorly constructed team that needs an almost complete makeover. To me, the Dolphins job was much more attractive.

I wouldn't want the Commanders job (and not because I hate them because I'm a Cowboys fan) because of the way that they handle the salary cap. I don't feel you can build team chemistry the way they are run.

The job that would interest me if I were in Garrett's shoes would be Seattle. Forget the fact they have oen of the 5 ugliest uniforms in the NFL, you would inherit some very real talent on both sides of the ball in a division that has 3 other teams who aren't going to be perenial threats. There's a chance at sustained success and with good drafts and cap management that team could reach the next level.

To me the Cowboys job in 2009 with the new stadium is by far the most attractive prospect. Again, not ebecause I am a Cowboys fan. I am completely stepping away from my loaylty to analyze this. Talent of the assembled team and attractiveness for Free Agents, etc. is a huge factor. So is exposure.

Easy choice for me.

Dallas > Baltimore

I've never seen or been to Dallas, but since I live in Maryland, I have been to Baltimore, I am pretty confident in agreeing with this assessment. I have a nickname for Baltimore: the "Big Ghetto".

Although it's slowly changing, outside of the harbor area and Johns Hopkins medical facilities which are relatively close to the harbor, that's what it is.

We should get word today on Garrett's plans. Some place I read that the Ravens offerred a 4 year deal for less then $3M yearly and that Garrett wasn't overly impressed with their offer. If true and Garrett was the guy they really wanted, the Ravens certainly didn't wow him with their contract offer. Some say that Garrett should do what's best for himself and his family and we certainly don't know what Jerry paying him now -- probably no more then $1M tops. I don't really see the Ravens offer as setting Garrett up financially as many would think it should and if Jerry can come close/match up there would be no financial reason to accept. Once financial issue out of the way it comes down to whether he wants to coach the Ravens or remain nother year with the Cowboys unless Garrett willing accept handshake which gives him HC job very soon.

Now of course we don't know what Garrett thinks must be done to improve the Ravens offense but he's gotta wonder about their QB situation, etc & an aging defense. Also how much influence will he have in the drafting process since Ozzie Newsom is viewed as a good GM but if that's the case why has talent on the team gone down hill. Probably cause they don't have a viable QB. Hmm. Should Garrett jump on his first head coaching job offer or wait another year?

Obviously I believe Garrett should stay with the Cowboys for at least 1 more year. I want continuity for our offense and I want Garrett to oversee the continued development of Romo for 1 more year; don't want Romo having to play in his 3 offensive scheme in 3 years. Besides thinking Garrett needs more work as an OC, I also think he needs more coaching experience before he's ready to become a head coach for any team.
