Garrett will need time

No one is talking Canton here.... there is no overrating implicit in the statement.

The point here is that the Cowboys have a decent roster ... no worse than average.

When rosters are bad, that's the time to plead for patience.

The talent level is a good bit better now than it was back in the days of Quincy.

I honestly don't know what to think of our roster any more. I DO believe that most on this board see it through homer eyes.

To listen to some around here, we have top 10 talent at every position. Then, when people don't include our guys in top 10 discussions, we say it is East Coast bias, etc, etc, etc.

Truth is, some of our most celebrated guys have some weaknesses that show up pretty consistently. That may be the reason some of them aren't considered top 10 from the national media.

Regardless, they are OUR guys and I'm rooting for them as always. I hope we win 12 games and that the most optimistic view of our roster is spot on.

lol. We have the most overrated roster (on this board) year in and year out.

Were you saying this the last four or five years?

There used to be people screaming all the time that we had the most talented team in the NFL by far... Now that was ridiculous. But to act like we aren't set up to win now is ridiculous, too.

Anyway, if it has been overrated here, it doesn't seem to be anymore.

He won't pay for it any way.

JG will make it part of the dress code, Romo will ignore it and be cut.

I don't care if Romo wears his wife's dress. But, Marion Barber should have taken notice...he got cut.

Now, I hope Choice knows that if you piss off the coach for getting Vick's autograph after getting your butt kicked...plus not playing special teams?

I don't think a Cowboy coach wants that kind of stuff, so Choice might be gone.

But this team is going to be organized in a professional manner....

;)

The Dallas Cowboy way....

I think if Garrett goes 3 - 6 in his first 9 games that Jerry will fire him and finally get a coach that knows what is going on in the NFL.

I mean come on now...Garrett is now 1-1 in preseason and it does not look good for this coming season.

I agree completely. 1-1 in the presesason is no way to start your coaching career. We are what we are - a .500 football team.

I didn't have time to say it... I was too busy saying we had a loser for a head coach, and I was right. That guy was AWFUL.

I have also criticized our GM consistently. I am happier than ever that it seems he has taken the step back that many of us were pleading for.

Now.... just as I can be honest and objective about where I'm coming from... why don't you begin every post with... "I just can't stand Jason Garrett"

:) :)

And you know I'm having fun Lab. I disagree with you on Garrett, but I usually agree with you on most everything else.

But 2 - 0 would be mucho better...

I'm really concerned about this team, bro!

I'm thinking the Cowboys are the "Nightmare Team"....!!!!

rcaldw, I notice you didn't answer the question. ;)

You seriously don't think this roster is good enough to win big with? How did it win the East with a loser at HC ;) two of the last four years if it's that overrated?

Seriously, that doesn't make sense.

Really, it wouldn't matter who Jerry had hired as HC last year. Barring injury to Romo or possibly Ware or others, we should expect to win now.

Brometheus, we're going like, 7-9 at the best. We just aren't very good...question marks everywhere...Miles Austin is the only real receiver we have, we should have drafted Brian Bulaga instead of Dez Bryant I heard Bulaga is playing both Guard AND Safety this season.

It's all on Jerrah Jonez!!!1

Ok, let me answer the question. I think we all know in today's NFL you can win big one year and lose big the next. It happens over and over again. That is what I mean by, "I don't know what to think of our roster". In addition, teams change a lot over a four year span.

We went 13-3 in 2007, but it was one year after Parcells.

Since then it was
9-7
11-5
1-7 (under Phillips)
5-3 (under Garrett

I grant you, it looks like we should be no worse than a middle of the pack team.

But are we on the upgrade in terms of our roster, or the downgrade?

I just don't know.

What I do know is that we need discipline and attention to detail.

I believe Garrett gives us that. I also think that OVER TIME, rosters begin to reflect their head coach. Parcells had his guys... Wade had his...

Lets give Garrett a little time to get his.

Personally, I predict no worse than 9-7 this year.

Is this a "have faith in Garrett" thread, or a "Jerry is an ***-clown" thread? I'm thinking it's the latter.

It's not true that we've been some wildly up-and-down team the last several years. Until last year, we hadn't had a losing season since 2004, which not many teams can say. We'd won our division two out of four years and made the playoffs three of the last four. In fact, we'd won more games than all but one or two teams in the league during that time.

More than anything, ever since Romo took over and stayed healthy, we'd been a very good team.

If the coaching is greatly improved this year, why shouldn't we expect to have a top team?

I didn't say wildly up and down but neither can we say we had a GREAT record year after year.

Starting with 2004
6-10
9-7
9-7
13-3**
9-7
11-5**
6-10

Take out the two exceptional records and the team has been 39-41...

My point is... is this a 24-8 roster, or a 39-41 roster?

I believe it is about a 9-7 roster. (But I admit that is a guess)

In addition, ARE WE GETTING BETTER OR WORSE? (In terms of roster talent)

Our defensive secondary hasn't looked good to me. Then again, it is early with Rob Ryan, and everyone is learning a new defense. I just don't know.

I make no bones about it, I believe our head coach is FAR superior to captian cupcake. FAR SUPERIOR.

It is no accident that Wade Phillips doesn't last long as a head coach.

So, in short... I hope you are right. I hope it is a division winning roster. I believe this. If it is, Garrett will get that out of them. I believe we will be among the very best prepared teams in the league.

LOL... Why do you want to keep eliminating our best years? They count just as much as the others.

And you're the one who keeps coming back to Wade, for some reason. Fine, give Parcells credit for 2007 if you want to, that makes no difference as far as the roster is concerned. Most of those core guys are still here, or equivalents or better are in place (as in Felix for Barber and Jenkins for Anthony Henry).

It is funny, though... Somehow I suspect that if Garrett had been the HC in 2007, the previous HC wouldn't be the one getting the credit. Just like if we win this year.

I think that's what this thread is really about: Hedging bets in case we don't win.

Anyway, as Sarge says... Carry on. :)

I actually made the comment to my brother that I think Garret is finally a coach that can go the distance and be around for a while with the Boys.

I'm not hedging any bets. I believe Garrett will be a stand out head coach for years to come. I would not be surprised if he is here 10 years or more.

And you aren't listening to me, because you think you are hearing me :)

I'm not eliminating anything. We went 13-3 in 2007 and 11-5 two seasons ago.

We followed those up with 9-7 and 6-10. Wouldn't you say that is a swing?

4 games the first time.
5 games the second time.

The way schedules fall, the way injuries occur, the shape your division is in... any of those things in TODAYS NFL can explain a good season or two.

I'm honestly asking.... were those records reflective of our roster, or all the right factors?

I don't know.

In addition... WE ARE AGING. I don't remember, I saw the other day, are we like the 2nd or 3rd oldest team in the league now?

Regardless, I'm looking forward to this season like I haven't in a long time. Why? I believe we have a future beyond less than 5 years with a head coach.

I may be proven wrong... I'm clearly on record with my belief... so if I'm wrong I'll take my medicine.
