Garrett's nepotism

One of the biggest reasons I think our team has struggled over the years is Garrett's weak coaching tree.

Most coaches inherit extremely experienced coaches across their staff from previous positions...

We hired a 2 year QBs coach to be our offensive coordinator. Someone who hadn't built those relationships.

As a result we have him hiring his brothers and former roommates or associates.

Joe Baker is a great example of this. Baker was a receiver for Garrett back at Princeton. This guy is a JAG and hasn't developed any safeties since he has been here in 2012, and yet here he is... still on the staff...

It was nepotism that got Garrett hired and it is nepotism that continues to sink our team.

Who is the Cowboys' director of pro scouting? Judd Garrett.... his qualifications? He was a tight ends coach for 2 years for the Rams... He did not rise in the scouting ranks to become director.

So you point to one minor position coach as your example, but ignore guys that he has brought in, like Hudson Houck. Bill Callahan, Scott Linehan, Monte Kiffin, Rod Marinelli, Mike Woicik, Rob Ryan, Rich Bisaccia, and a litany of other experience coaches through his tenure?

First off, Garrett didnt hire half of those coaches. And he definitely ran off Callahan. Probably one of the best position coaches we have EVER had. He is now coaching in Washington into the playoffs.

The ONLY coach you can say Garrett had a big hand in hiring was Callahan. Jones hired most of other guys with or without Garrett permission.

This is just speculation. Even if it were true, it still erodes the premise of the OP that Garrett's coaching tree is weak because Garrett only hires family members.

Well, I think without question, you can certainly speculate that our coaching tree is weak. And for that, Jones is accountable. Callahan we know for a fact that Garrett ran him out of Dallas. Callahan couldnt get out of here fast enough. Linehan, I have no doubts that Garrett wanted him hired and went to Jerry on that one. The first go around of coaches were Jerry hires. He did it with Wade and he did it again with Garrett in the beginning for sure. You can call it speculation, but its pretty obvious.

Jones fired Garretts brother and seemed to make a point of it. So the notion that Garrett hires and fires all the coaches under him is a myth.

The fact that there is even a discussion about a Garrett Coaching Tree amazes me. This thread made me review all our current assistant coaches' backgrounds. Besides Rod, the others are a sight for sore eyes. This Organization should be embarrassed for the incompetence.

Well, it is pretty obvious what the real problem is. It's not Garrett's "coaching tree", which I think is ridiculous to even act like a rookie head coach will have any kind of tree anways, but it's Jerry's ineptitude as the general manager.

I do not follow the Panthers or Pats very closely because I do not really care for these teams, But I will answer your question. I recognize the following Panther Coaches: Shula, DeHaven, McDermott, Dorsey, Proehl,& Skipper. For the Pats: McDaniel, Fears, Patricia, & Daboll.

Belichik does not need as much help as Garrett when it comes to Coaching either. He has lost and gained many assistant coaches over the past years. Garrett needs all the help he can get.

In what other organization has a guy with no experience immediately been put on as an OC, and then a few years after, after being part of a staff that resulted in the team giving up, handed the reins over to that green guy?

Garrett could have been a fantastic coach, but his progress was ruined by him getting fast-tracked into the HC position. In boxing, you don't put some bright new recruit against the champ and have him get knocked out. In football, it's also preferable that you sit a QB and let him learn the game and settle into the league. Same thing with coaching.

Garrett simply doesn't have the experience to compete against guys who have been studying under some of the best coaches for a decade if not more before getting their shot. Garrett should be in college somewhere experimenting and learning coaching or he should still be an assistant under a coach with the credentials. He simply hasn't had the time to really learn how to coach, and we're watching him get his 'on the job training' right now, which is unfortunate, since it's on such a huge stage. The problem with him being put on the big stage so fast is, who is going to hire a coach with an 8 and 8 history if he's ever ejected from his job here?

Yeah, this is it. Maybe in 15 years he will be a good coach. He's in over his head.
