Not that wild to me. He was completely nonexistent the 2nd half of the season last year to the point the coaches in Green Bay began to question his effort.

And he's essentially replacing a player in Clowney who just played better and better as the year went on. 8.5 sacks and not even on the team in September.
 
Overall good news for the cowboys but that also kinda destroys the argument that he would have gotten more money on the open market.

Don’t get me wrong I think Gary upgrades the roster, but he’s also clearly a declining asset that the cowboys should not be putting all their hopes in this year. We still need a starting caliber edge player that can rotate in with Gary/EZ

It’s 100% an upgrade and the pay cut makes it even better. Only the 4th round pick is questionable, as Jerry has a poor history of treating those like they’re not worth much. Maybe there was a giant bidding war for him, but we may never find that out

Plus.....once Parsons went down and it was his time to step up.....be had ZERO sacks!

Some just saw it as a replacement for Clowney, assumed because it was leaked he would be cut and not worth sending any compensation, plus his name isn't Maxx.

I personally liked the move and seeing what some of these edge guys got on the open market, I think his contract is pretty reasonable comparatively. Without a trade there would be no guarantee he signs here. Also it's rare you find a pass rusher in the 4th round that will be able to contribute as much as Gary out of the gates.
