General consensus on Rob Ryan

Within group A, subgroup A-1 could have a consensus, which I wouldn't consider a "general consensus" given the context.

Now you're going to have to explain which group is A and which is A-1 within "Cowboys fans."

"Realists" and optimists.

it is embarrassing that we have a member of that classless family on the team.

Our defense was significantly better than the year before and we had basically the same players. I mean, yeah, I still wasn't happy with them, but improvement is improvement. So, I like him.

I believe the lockout hurt the entire defensive coaching staff from getting to learn each players nuances. PLUS, we had some guys that just flat out sucked last year (and some coaches also). I think with an entire offseason and new players in different places, they will be alright.

So what do you guys think?

I am not a big fan of his loud mouth and I think he was exposed late in the year. His own hype about all the "talent" he had on the field bit him in the *** a bit.

I think he is a decent defensive coordinator who was overhyped coming in. Carr should help, but really, we have a lot of problems on the defense.

What say you?

What do I think.. I think You have over exposed yourself this was talked about the first week of the 2011 season..

G.... can we just move on....
:bang2:

He runs a high risk, high reward style of defense that is, by its nature, inconsistent. The hope is that the defense is disruptive enough to make up for the times that Ryan guesses wrong.

The defense has a few very high quality players, but overall had too many weak links to be more than marginally effective last year.

But more higher quality defensive players won't change the facts -- The NFL is an offense driven league that plays under rules which favor passing offenses. It is too much to expect any defense to be truly dominant under such circumstances.

I usually give a guy 2 years to make significant improvements. If his improvements doesn't significantly improve this year, or they stay the same or worse, dump him.

I never judge a person after one year. Jerry did him no favors by keeping Spencer on, the none pressure shall continue.

So far I like what I see. Keeping in mind it was a cram session with the lock out and the weak secondary of course. A lot of times he had the D playing great getting the stops we needed and the blitz brought a lil heat early on in the year. I think things like quality depth, players he put in place simply not making the play( bad angles and poor tackling) and the offense at times not picking up at least one first down to give them a rest made his D look bad IMO.

I like him. I really do.

I can't blame him for only having one ILB last year, and that one only had one arm to tackle with most of the season.

I also can't blame him for a banged up secondary all year, and one of those that gained 5 yrs in age almost over night.

He's a positive guy and I like that about him. The D might not be all world, but he appears to coach them up like they are. That goes a long ways.

Now if we don't go all in on defense in this draft I will be totally disgusted and feel sorry for him.

This really sums up my thoughts nicely. Not only did Newman turn into Betty White all of a sudden last year, but James and Brooking were about as active as Bob Hope and Bing Crosby...and they're DEAD! Just having Carr, Carter, Connor, and Lee's second arm should help tremendously this year. It may not make us have a top defense, but it should at least allow Rob's schemes to have a fighting chance to work. I expect to see a big jump ahead this year, even without an improved pass rush. If we manage to improve that somehow with a draft pick, then look out!

Ask again after the season is over

I do think he needs to stop blitzing so much

I like him but I will say this will be the tell all season in terms of his system and how he prepares his unit for the games. I can somewhat agree that putting a system into place under the conditions they faced last season can be hard especially the more complicated the system however with a full off season and scheduled OTA as well as a year under their belt I expect them to go out and execute as a unit

I dont mind Ryan's style.....but I hate that it seems he makes no adjustments during the game.

Im probably wrong ....but it sure didnt seem like he did

For me, having all the players love playing for him says a lot, and the fact that they all seem to love the scheme he plays.

So, I'm fine seeing what he can do with a full offseason and some new talent being brought in.

I like the approach he has taken with his aggressive scheme over what Wade had done in previous years. I saw him actually bothering some QBs, mostly in the beginning of the year, though I think that started to fade as the year progressed. This year he is really going to need some help from the players; they need to study the playbook and know their assignments—there should be no excuses this year, no uncovered WRs, no confused gestures in the backfield before the play “who am I supposed to cover?”. I really feel that the players trouble grasping the scheme was a big part of our defensive issues last year which ultimately led to a lack of confidence in the players and Ryan calling more simplistic and ineffective plays.

He is great DC but does not have the talent to make us a dominant defense

He needs to get his head out of his *** and stop calling 5 and 6 man blitzes when we're ahead and our DBs are being exposed.

Aggressiveness is all well and good, but when you keep getting beaten and you keep going back to the same thing (which he did a couple of games last year) that is just plain stupid.

I like him. I like his arrogance. Bottom line is we dont have the talent. Look what Wade did in Houston and how bad our d was under him. We need some more talent.
