General consensus on Rob Ryan

Ryan's defense gave up 68 points to the Gnats, 54 to the Egirls and 40 to the Deadskins. The Cowboys finished 2-4 in the division and the defense got worse as the season went on giving up 162 points in the first 8 games and 185 in the last.

By comparison, Pasqualoni's defense gave up 174 points in the last 8 games of the 2010 season.

"We're gonna be great." - Rob Ryan

I think your numbers are off.

Not sure where but I think it was 175 / 172

More realistically, 154 / 172 because 2INTs and a blocked punt were scored when the defense wasn't even on the field during the first month of the season.

The Giants absolutely pissed on Rob's D. No mistake about it. The 1st Eagles game, they did as well.

But Rob had his good games as well.

I wasn't too pleased with how things ended because Newman basically made the entire team look inept all by himself.

But over the course of the season I think the defense did a pretty good job given the deficiencies in the secondary and across the DL.

When you subtract the Lions' two INT TDs and the Jets PR TD, there were 11 games last season where the defense surrendered 20 points or less.

I wouldn't have thought there were that many but there are.

A lot of room for improvement but it's not like there isn't something to build on.

He should continue building up his own players...but needs to shut up about the opponents.

Needed a hillbilly?

What inherent trait of the hillbilly that cannot be found in non-hillbillys is actually needed?

A sharp whistle when pronouncing the letter 'S'?

Haha!!!!

Full of sound and fury signifying something?

He isn't nearly as bad as his brother or his pops but if he wasn't a Ryan or looked like a pirate, he wouldn't be as celebrated.

But part of me holds out hope with Rob, that he hasn't had a talented defense anywhere he's gone, he's been forced to rely on smoke and mirrors to cover up severely depleted units, and I've seen his defense single handedly beat Tom Brady.

I'm hoping now that he doesn't have a defense with 3-5 glaring holes, he'll most likely be the benefactor of a first round pick, he just got 3 free agents, one of them a premier corner, an upgrade at ILB, and a guy who is familiar with his scheme and is at least slightly better than Abe Elam.

The jury is still out, this year is his second with the team, he'll have a full offseason, and he won't be relying on guys like Terence Newman, Keith Brooking, Bradie James, Allen Ball, etc.

Bill Walsh said it best, you can hide a hole on offense because of your play calling, and you can design plays to protect his weaknesses. But on defense, you're exposed, if you've got a weak player - he will get targetted and exploited.

So think back to last year, it was painful watching Newman, Brooking, James, etc trying to keep up last year when they were just clearly outmatched and were getting exposed on a weekly basis.

This year we shouldn't see that, we also should see a more acclimated group playing with more swagger and an overall more talented group - therefore the results should reflect the moves we've made. Carr is a baller, Jenkins is playing for a contract, ditto for Spencer, Carter should be coming into his own and really push Connor for playing time, Lee/Ware/Ratliff are only going to get better as they get more talented counterparts. I look forward to seeing this side of the ball the most, we just need them to be average for us to be a playoff team. If they are good to great, then we can be a legit Super Bowl contender.

True, the INT's and PR were not the defense's fault early in the season, but I expected the defense to improve overall as the season wore on and it just didn't.
In December and January, the defense gave up an average of 24 points a game and the Cowboys finished 1-4 after being in first place after Thanksgiving at 7-4.

Can the defense get better? Yes, of course.

Replacing Newman, Bradie and Elam with Carr, Carter/Connor and Poole will hopefully make the defense better.
I'm optimistic about it improving with the additions this year, but I sure wasn't impressed with how Ryans' defense finished last year.
