Okay, so if you trade for a player, as we did with Cooper, your team simply inherits his existing contract. In contrast to that, if a player is cut and you pick him up off of waivers or via free agency, you start new with contract talks. Correct so far?
Here's what I'm wondering about:
Can a team, on the other hand, trade for a player, but have a reworking of the contract be part of the deal? I remember when we lost DeMarco Murray and there were a ton of rumors that we would trade for Adrian Pederson. The going wisdom was his salary cap hit would be way too hard. I kept wondering if the team could have made a trade contingent upon Pederson restructuring his contract. Is this possible or does the league have a rule against it?
