The current system brings the chance no matter how slim of pitting both New York teams or both Bay area teams against each other in the Superbowl. It may not happen, but there is always a chance. The NBA does that strict geographical set up, so no way the Knicks and Nets will face each other in the finals or the Lakers and Clippers. None of the Texas teams or Florida teams will ever see each other for the championship either. In the NFL, it can happen. Pittsburgh vs. Philadelphia or Dallas vs. Houston. Okay, maybe not the last one.

There are only a few teams in the NFL that are geographically challenged under the current system. Probably only the Chiefs, Dolphins, Rams and Cowboys ever really have to go out of their way when it comes to traveling to divisional road games. Those teams also have some of the best division rivalries. The rest of the divisions and teams are already in close proximity.

The NFL has a good system in place. There is no need to change that.

will never happen.

The NFL makes its money off the Cowboys and the big East Coast television markets.

Arizona and Houston already watch Cowboys games instead of their own historically craptacular teams.

The Cowboys, Giants, Philly and Washington all want the real bellcow division to remain the NFC East.

Well, so much for an open-minded review of this idea.

Imagine the Eagles/Skins/Giants crying in their beer for losing their cash cow: The Dallas Cowboys.

Re the open-minded: Same people who said instant replay would ruin and delay the game. Same folks who, when Dallas Cowboy Weekly began publishing, stormed the presses and wrecked the newsroom. They from that point became the Luddites. Same group who thought Lombardi and ol' Tom Landry should replace Washington and Jefferson on Mount Rushmore. Same un's who want black high tops back as gear. And helmets without facemasks. LOL
Kidding. (Mostly):laugh2:

Geographic proximity is not as big a deal in the NFL as it is in leagues like the NBA or NHL.

The reason is that NFL teams play only once a week, therefore they have to travel less frequently than NBA or NHL teams, which usually play three times a week.

So, if the divisional opponants are further away, the travel is less frequent, so the travel time is thus mitigated by the fact that the team can choose to travel when it feels like it (getting into the city they will be playing in at a convenient time, unlike MLB teams that often have to take the red-eye after a game on a 'getaway day' goes long.) and doesn't have to do it as often.

I like the MLB set up except for the Rangers who really do get screwed. Oakland, Anaheim, and Seattle
