Comedian George Carlin dies in Los Angeles at 71

9:49 p.m. June 22, 2008

LOS ANGELES – Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital Sunday, a spokesman said. He was 71.
Carlin, who had a history of heart problems, died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PDT (9 p.m. EDT) after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.

Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine about seven dirty words you could not say on television. A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of his “Filthy Words” routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

"I was following this guy on a 2 lane hiway who had his left blinker on so I was afraid to pass him, then I realized he was taking a left turn around the world."

One of his only clean jokes:D

Damn ... plus 7-words-you-can't-say-on-TV ...

Sorry mods for moving it, but just saw that one of the genius guys in show business, George Carlin, died.

He used to DJ over in Fort Worth at KFJZ I think.

I thought he was in pretty good health ...

Dang, a big time icon died. He always seemed like a young guy because he was always up to date in his comedy ... because he was smart it seemed like he would live to a crusty old age.

Sorry for thread, but I just had to put it here where the "important people" would see it. ...

Award-winning comedian George Carlin dies

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) -- A publicist for George Carlin says the legendary comedian has died of heart failure at a hospital in Santa Monica, Calif.

Carlin performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas.

Jeff Abraham says Carlin went into St. John's Health Center on Sunday afternoon, complaining of chest pain. Carlin died at 5:55 p.m. PDT. He was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart trouble, performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas. It was announced Tuesday that Carlin was being awarded the 11th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

The dean of counterculture comedians, Carlin constantly pushed the envelop with his jokes,
particularly with a routine called "The Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV."

When Carlin uttered all seven at a show in Milwaukee in 1972, he was arrested for disturbing the peace. And when they were played on a New York radio station, they resulted in a Supreme Court ruling in 1978 upholding the government's authority to sanction stations for broadcasting offensive language.

R.I.P. for Carlin, a pioneer in the comedy world.

Apparently, you can't quote him here... I got a warning for posting a couple of his quotes (probably due to the seven dirty words, a couple of which aren't in the censor filter).

That's probably the first time I've gotten a warning on a legit forum in 6 years.

Wow.... my brother will be in mourning for a while... he loved this guy.

I gotta say... watching his last comedy gig on HBO? ... he seemed like a guy on the way out.... it was like he knew and he was really gonna let us have it... so much so that it didnt work like his work from years before.

Well.... he now has the answer to all the religion stuff and who exists and who doesnt ;)

RIP!

"The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live."

Farewell, George.
