Ah, the guy had some average work out numbers, better avoid the guy like the plague... never mind how he actually looked with pads on... nevermind the guy actually played well on the field...

For fans that that throw out Emmitt being too slow, but never caught from behind... this seems fairly limited in thought...

Nah, he ran a 4.5, I don't want him... just stupid line of thinking...

I'm a UGA guy and he had a decent yr, but he isnt a shutdown CB and never will be...he got way too much credit for supposedly shutting down Calvin Johnson, but if you actually watched that game you'd see Johnson was wide open alot but was missed on terrible throws by the worst college QB in the nation Reggie Ball

If I were the Cowboys GM, and I am not, I would consider taking him with a 4th. If he remains available in the 6th, I would pull the trigger in a heart beat. most guys taken in the 6th and beyond usually have little chance of making a roster anyway. You might as well use it on a potential 1st round guy.

I wouldn't mind looking at him if he drops to the 3rd or 4th. As noted above, these Supplemental guys don't get to attend these "speed camps" and mostly just work out on their own, so I cut them a little slack. And low 4.5's isn't horrible for a guy 6'0 205. He's not a DeAngelo Hall or Terrence Newman body type.

I think someone will still use a 3rd on him, it's not like teams that need secondary help have many options at this point.

But I am told we don't need an Anthony Henry body type CB, since Henry sucks...

That sucks... I was hoping he would run better. He's def. going to a cover two team IMO... big strong guy

If the coaches watch his college film and see how the guy moves and plays... that would be the deciding factor, IMO.

He's big, and like IR said, the supplemental guys don't have the advantage of all the speed camps that work on getting the 40 times down.

Just with a little taken off from a speed camp he'd be in the 4.45 range and we'd all be saying he's a 6 foot, 205 pound guy who can move.

Personally, I'd like to see his 10 yard time, 3 cone drill time and shuttle time to see how his quickness and change of direction is. Yes, long speed is important at CB... but his quickness and how he can turn his hips are really important too. His 40 time doesn't tell us that.

If all that is good, I might would bid a third on him.

Or maybe he'd be better suited to play FS in the NFL. He may not have the speed to be an elite CB (although I think 4.5 is fast enough) and may need to have the play in front of him. He certainly has the size for a FS.

I still think a 3rd is a worthwhile gamble on this kid as a CB.

Mabye; for a third I don't really have that big of a problem. Anthony Henry ran those same times... I don't know if I want another version of him. 4.5 speed isn't bad, but when he gets older he is going to be slooowww.

A cover two team can get more out of his strength jamming recievers and smacking them in the mouth when they try to catch the ball.

I agree here. I think that as a FS prospect, he might have some value. If he played CB, then he can probably make a nice transition to FS. I wonder what his short shuttle and 10 and 20 times are. If he has a good quick break to the ball and has the ability to identify, that's really what you need at FS. I'd think about maybe a 4th. I wouldn't consider a 3rd. It's not like we don't have a couple of guys already at FS but with Hamlin signed for just a year, it might be wise to look at this guy. Also, really depends on how good a special teams player he is. If he is an excellent special teams player, maybe I consider a 3rd but probably still a 4th for us.

I agree with your assessment for the most part. But I don't know if Jerrah would even want to spring a pick for a FS since we have Hamlin and Watkins there. If he has first round talent and not any other holes I say go for it.

Oliver makes his case for scouts

posted: Wednesday, June 20, 2007 | Print Entry

Former Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver may not have wowed the 27 teams attending his workout Wednesday, but he may have done enough to earn the chance to be a reasonably high pick in the 2007 NFL supplemental draft on July 12.

Oliver ran in the 4.5 second range. While that might not be the 4.3 that would have locked him into the second or first round, he probably did well enough to make himself a solid third-round consideration.

Rated one of the top corners in the 2008 draft, Oliver had to leave Georgia early because of grades. He only had three weeks to train for this workout.
Oliver is a big cornerback who fits a Cover 2 scheme. He trimmed his weight from 208 pounds to 195 pounds. He has good ball skills. With the number of teams attending, it's pretty apparent he is the name player in a supplemental draft that is starting to take shape.

40 times can definitely be overrated, but I think a 40 time is probably more important for a corner than for any other position.

I don't claim to know a lot about the guy but if he was productive in college I would still consider giving a middle-late round draft choice for him.

The worst thing for us would have been Oliver running a 4.3 and having some ridiculous vertical. If he did that, he'd go in the 1st or 2nd round. Because he ran a 4.5, we have a shot at him in the 3rd or 4th where he could be a steal. 4.5 isn't that slow. If he can play, his forty time won't matter too much.

I think getting him in the third is a good deal b/c he would have been a first rounder imo.

He played fs in high school some but was mostly a cb. He prob would have run in the 4.4 range if he had longer then three weeks to train. I mean the college guys have months and months of speed training. Very fast guys can run slow 40s if they dont know the technique behind it. Your start in the 40 will make or break you

which is what our D asks our corners to do, I'd take him, but not as high as I originally pegged him

so 4th/5th, a 6th, even better

Not with the 40 time he just put up he wouldn't have been a first rounder.

There's such a need for depth at the CB position throughout the league that I honestly don't see him going past the third rd.

Infact, I wouldn't be surprised one bit if he went to a team that used a late 2nd rounder on him.
