Protocol in the U.S. already calls for always having two people in the cockpit. From the article yahoo article WoodsyGirl posted:

Surprised this was not the case everywhere. It will be now.

Thank you for that.

That's good to know.

I've talked about my dislike for flying in several threads and this just adds to it. You have to worry about mechanical problems, terrorists, unruly passengers who want to take down the plane and now mentally disturbed/depressed pilots who purposely crash planes to commit suicide.

Actually it's not the flying part I dislike I enjoy flying it's the potential for crashing that worries me.

Odds of dying in one of the 78 major world airlines -
1 in 4.7 million

In the Top 39 airlines with the best accident rates
1 in 19.8 million

Bottom 39 with the worst accident rates
1 in 2.0 million

For example, the odds of dying in a plane crash are equal to quadruplets being born — but not just any quadruplets, naturally conceived quadruplets. And not just any naturally conceived quadruplets, but naturally conceived identical quadruplets.

Odds of dying in plane crash in U.S. are equal to being struck by lightning SEVEN times.

So while it CAN happen, worrying about something with those odds seems ridiculous to me.

I've beaten some pretty steep odds so regardless how astronomical the odds are against something whether it be bad or good it can happen if you take enough chances.

I was involved in a crash landing years ago and I'm sure the odds of that happening are pretty slim. I use to enjoy boarding a plane until that happened it scared the hell out of me.

Me and someone had a discussion about that. lol I like my chances in a car accident a lot better than hitting the ground at 500 mph. At least in a car accident it's sudden unlike the terrifying ordeal those passengers went through the final two minutes of their flight.

That stat was dying in a car accident, not just being in one.

Cars don't scare me some think I have a death wish with the cars I drive but I'm not a speed demon I drive safe. The roads are packed with cars so the odds of dying in a car crash are a lot higher than the odds of dying in a plane crash. I'm sure if you check the stats the odds of surviving a car crash are a lot better than the odds of surviving a plane crash.
