Patriots favored 3-to-1 for Super Bowl XLII

(May 3, 2007) — You probably won't be shocked to learn that the New England Patriots are the post-draft favorite to win Super Bowl XLII. No other team has improved nearly as much since the end of last season. But 3-to-1 is a surprisingly short price. The defending champion Indianapolis Colts are 7-to-1.
One of the most frustrating things about being a Buffalo Bills fan is that New England also is in the AFC East.

Patriots 3-to-1
San Diego 13-to-2
Colts 7-to-1
Denver 12-to-1
Carolina 16-to-1
Chicago 18-to-1
Cincinnati 18-to-1
Baltimore 20-to-1
Jacksonville 20-to-1
Seattle 20-to-1
New Orleans 20-to-1
Philadelphia 22-to-1
Dallas 25-to-1
Pittsburgh 25-to-1
New York Giants 30-to-1
San Francisco 30-to-1
Arizona 35-to-1
Atlanta 40-to-1
Houston 40-to-1
New York Jets 40-to-1
Tennessee 40-to-1
Washington 40-to-1
Miami 45-to-1
Tampa Bay 45-to-1
Green Bay 55-to-1
Kansas City 60-to-1
St. Louis 60-to-1
Minnesota 85-to-1
Buffalo 90-to-1
Detroit 90-to-1
Cleveland 95-to-1
Oakland 120-to-1
I won't suggest that the Bills have a chance to win Super Bowl XLII, but I believe they should be rated ahead of several teams with lower odds (including the Texans, Jets, Dolphins and Packers).
Most tempting odds — Patriots (3-to-1 is a short price, but the roster is long on talent; Tom Bradycould pass for 5,000-plus yards); Colts (7-to-1; generous odds on the defending champions); Saints (20-to-1; they have the offensive talent to outscore any opponent); Cowboys (25-to-1; I believe Wade Phillips will get more out of the team than the Tuna did).
Least tempting odds — 49ers (30-to-1; they're getting better but are not ready to win a Super Bowl); Giants (30-to-1; no way without Tiki Barber and with Eli Manning); Texans (40-to-1; why would anyone think they're better than Buffalo?); Miami (45-to-1; if Trent Green is your QB savior, the Super Bowl isn't your promised land); Green Bay (55-to-1; the team doesn't look any better than last season, and Brett Favre is a year older); Browns (95-to-1; c'mon); Raiders (wouldn't be a bargain at 1,200-to-1).
