Getting Antsy About Capers

I guess I still don't see why there's so much love for Capers. I'd rather have Pagano.

Unless we're talking about a coordinator-in-waiting, which is a stupid idea anyway.

For the very first time ever, I agree with you.

Ditto. Here's my conspiracy theory. Capers thought to himself that it would be a good opportunity to come to Dallas because if Wade doesn't win a Super Bowl, he's fired next season, and he'd get to just jump right up to DC if Garrett is replaces Wade. Then he came down and realized that Wade was running the show in terms of interviewing coaches, etc., and now isn't sure if that's the case. But by now it might be too late in the game for him to get any desirable DC positions, so he'll come be our linebacker coach reluctantly, but not immediately.

Better explanation. Capers gets 2.6 million for NOT coaching next year b/c he had a year left on what was at the time one of the largest assistant coaching contracts.

Whatever Dallas pays him, will come out of that 2.6 - he make 2.6 mill whether he works or not.

Right now, he likely asking himself whether he wants to take a year off or not.

The countervailing interest of course is that he knows that Dallas is going to be successful and that success will rub off on him, whether it's being promoted here or getting a DC position elsewhere. Otherwise, he's just a guy that sat out of football for a year after getting fired.

of course, he was so well regarded when he was fired from his last job that he became the league's highest paid assistant

Maybe the Cowboys looked and said "Hey, here is a guy who is overqualified to be a positional coach. Let's bring him in for a look-see."

Look-see commences.

It could be as simple as Wade wants to bring in as many guys with experience coaching as possible. Grantham as DC experience as does Stewart. Capers and Campo have head coaching experience as well as DC experience.

Maybe Wade wants to surround himself with as many qualified assistants as possible to ensure that the "big picture" is seen.

Sure, you *could* coach any position... But this would be the equivalent of hiring Dave Campo to coach the defensive line. Wouldn't that seem a little strange?

Maybe it would work fine, and since it looks like we'll hire him, I hope it does. But it's starting to smell a little rotten to me.

Capers is a 3-4 guru. The 3-4 is all about LBs. He will be fine of that I am sure.

Of course his secondary specialty is, uh, the secondary. But Jerry already has a genius coaching the secondary now.

I dont understand how some of these people are doubting the coaching abilities of 34 LB's to a coach that has not only Coordinated a 34 defense but has 35 years of coaching experience in the NFL.

I think that adding Capers at any capacity would be a plus for the cowboys.

Hos' post got me to look that up, and it's true. Capers was the DB coach for Jim Mora in the USFL and then followed him to the Saints. He then became the DC for the Steelers.

So Capers has never coached linebackers.

Why are we bringing this guy in again?

he's been a Dcoordinator, so I'm sure he knows how all the positions on D work

I'm w/ you Hos

Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding. We have a winner.

Capers may not have held the title of LB coach, but he is widely recognized as an innovator of the zone blitzes, which of course, creates opportunities for the LB's.

If for no other reason, we should bring him in to teach his method of getting after the QB.

hell, getting our corners to know how to cover in a zone, would be good to me

You'd think so -- he's also got what, 6 or 7 years of HC experience? He could likely coach a few of the offensive positions with that experience.

I have no doubt that Capers knows every position.

I'm not in love with all these ex fired head coaches being positional coaches. Hopefully Wade can manage them in a team positive way geared to peak in December and not pre 12-1.

I'm in that boat as well.

That is better than going with some coach that has only been in the league a couple of years.

Actually, I think it's as simple as the Super Bowl being the center of attention. The league doesn't like any announcements this week, and they may have even reminded Jerry of that when Campo was brought aboard. I suspect that Dom Capers is hired next week.

To heck with the League I say. Their fault this Super Bowl is so boring.

Well I guess the Rams didnt get that memo either, making the Al Saunders hire today.
