Getting Max NFL Draft Value

Drafting for Value

We have finally arrived at the spot where longtime practitioners of the NFL Draft hang their hat. When you combine both of the above tactics you get value and that is the key to successful drafting. Of course how to determine “value” is key. To wit let’s look at the Dallas Cowboys.

For this exercise, we have to agree the Cowboys have team “needs” at LB, OL, Safety, and WR (disclaimer: I don’t agree with the list but it’s the one being most used right now). Then as their first-round pick comes at 19 they are looking at several available players on their board.

To get the most “bang for their buck” in the first round the Cowboys have to consider which player would be available in the second, which position group has the biggest drop off after “their guy” is gone and just how good is the guy they are looking at...

We have two serious holes at LB and OG,IMO.
Looking at the 2017 video train wreck the left side of the line was an embarrassment.
We dont win if Dak cant set his feet. Value is wonderful but fix the offensive line.

I know I know. I'm getting crabby. I read all this posts about the need for WR,which is true. LB also true,DT love it
safety ya buddy. The line has to be attended to and I wouldn't go past the second round without a sure fire solution
to OG which we dont have. When the war room selects a offensive lineman within the first two rounds I relax and let the wind blow.
Hernandez would make me relax but thats lots of resources at one position

To the article of course I agree

A rather good piece of literature. The writer went over the various ways most teams draft and does some good examples.... He roasted us with the 2nd round picks we like to get cute on and explains why, while giving us credit on Dak for his rookie year. A rather unbiased observation that gave a good reason to look at OG for the first pick. I agree to the point it is a need and has great value, but we need a 3rd capable LB in the worst way. While I doubt we can draft a LB that can play all 3 positions like the LB we lost, we do need one that can excel in at least one and it is not the position that plays only on certain downs. So far Mr. Wilson is patchwork at best until proven otherwise. I am not saying to reach for any man, but if either the top 2 LB's fall it has to be a consideration to fill the biggest need. After that it is questioning rather the other 2 LB's slated 1st round or early 2nd is head and shoulders above the 3rd round talent like Jewell....

Only way I can live with another offensive lineman is we get Connor Williams that could play both OG or OT...... He would be a darn good OG from the start and could be a real good Tackle as well.... He would have the same skill set much like Collins..... I really do see value there..... Just hate the fact it takes a line of All-Pros to protect a QB..... No other team has given so many resources to a QB as we have done. If we give Dak another 1st round OG/OT to pair with the studs he already has, Zeke and/or Dak himself should be able to walk to the 1st down markers..... This is why I want defense if the value is there.....

...but that offensive line would dominate in yardage and possession time in almost all games.

Two of the three huge check offs of Bill Parcells. The third being special team's dominance.

Trust me, I understand, but dominating one side of the ball does what for teams? I think the Colts did get one SB out of the deal after being the team to beat for almost a decade..... That was having weapons and a so-so offensive line... Please remember they had a good pass rush too.... Patriots had a so-so offensive line and a great slot WR and TE, but was very good defensively. Steelers during their SB runs had a good defense, good QB, at least one great WR, TE, RB, another WR that could stretch the field to open the middle of the field. While it looks like I am crying over weapons (which we have a small few), the one thing in common was the defense.

I agree we get better building our lines.... But can we have a few 1st rounders on both side of the ball to even out our aggression on teams.... If a badass 1 tech or LB falls to us, I want that stud...... There are rather good OG's that will be there in the 2nd round. Not seeing a lot of game changing talent in the later rounds for defenses......

I can't and will not argue the point and if we draft CWilliams count me a happy camper.
It's too much resources at one position but I think it moves us into the play offs. Seriously

I don't get the panic on either one of these.

At LB, we've got our two 3 down OLBs in Smith and Lee. We've got their veteran backup in Thomas. We've got a 4th year player in Wilson who people were talking up big a couple of years ago, and whose workload has increased in that time.

Really, we need a 2 down run specialist at MLB. Not a tough thing to find. And a developmental LB or two.

Similarly, we need a starting LG. The easiest lineman to find. We've already got our interior backup player in Looney.

Both positions are easy to fill, as they are the cheapo graveyard of players without the speed and agility to play the premier positions in their player groups, for both veterans and draft picks.

Defense deals with base level talents and huge hearts that challenge an opponent on each and every play.

Offenses have to handle an opponent, aggressively...in today's NFL, not yester year's, that takes a whole lot of here and now talent.

Drafting for Value

Except maybe for Evans, I see a whole lotta guys who should be available well into the 20s. The value play would be to trade back, unless they're in love with a particular player.

Why no Ridley on the list? He may be gone, but maybe not too. Lots of people are pooh poohing him as "not a true 1". I can see him lasting.

No Vea either. Odd. They didn't even consider DT. That used to be the consensus most likely pick.

Oh really let me remind of of the 2017 season.

I'm of the mind that we're a play off team and MLB is an important piece but more important is the OG.
I got psychological damage last year watching the offensive line flood like a Dutch dike.I wonder what Dak felt like.
Spend the capital to give Dak time and this team will go to the play offs.

I wouldn't object to any of the picks that Steven Van Over suggests here. All are needs and possible solutions that shouldn't be overlooked. Especially so, with either or both picks of Will Hernandez and/or Connor Williams, who would undoubtedly make my day. The others that were mentioned would really be quite pleasing acquisitions as well.

You may get your wish on OG. They've left a hole, and said nothing about moving anyone else there, so maybe it's a draft priority.

Conner Wiiiams would be a great pick, then move up to the top of the 2nd round to get a WR

so the cowboys need four first round talents on the offensive line for dak to be protected and for the offense to succeed that's a lot of cap space for one part of the team I think they need coaches that can coach players drafted in lower rounds to be able to do the job and and front office people that can better judge talent

I agree with much of what he said...

But, like many, I think he's a little too hung up on quantity of plays and not enough on the quality.

For example, even if you choose linebacker and that linebacker becomes a two-down player who contributes to a lot of third and longs, which in turn begets more frequent 3rd and outs, that's really good draft value.

I found it odd that Wynn isn't on the list at all.

If it's only two downs, you're starting behind the 8-ball.

Then consider how many of those two downs that the linebacker will actually be involved in the play and the numbers decrease dramatically.

"Quality" would have to be all-world to come close to equaling the "quantity."
