The Giants and former Commanders linebacker LaVar Arrington have reached agreement in principle. The deal is for seven years, $49 million.

Five teams had been in the running for Arrington, but the Giants took a significant step toward getting a deal done Thursday. After Arrington took and passed a physical Thursday, negotiations turned serious and had been ongoing for more than 24 hours.

The Packers, Jaguars, Dolphins and Bengals had also been in the mix. Arrington's agent, Carl Poston, said the Jaguars and Packers made progress with their offers Friday, but the Giants took the lead Friday.

Arrington had hoped to stay in the NFC East in order to play the Commanders two times a year.

"Antonio Pierce really made a push to get the Giants to bring LaVar to New York," Poston said Friday. "It's a good fit. It would be great to have LaVar in the New York market."

Pierce left the Commanders after the 2004 season and was an instant star in the Giants defense.

The Dolphins had a $5 million a year offer on the table. Arrington was hoping to get a deal in the $7.5 million a year range.

Between Manning and the rest of their roster, they are going to be tieing up a lot of cap space in a relatively few people.

I know many people are going to come in and argue that they overpaid...and they may have (depending on how much is guaranteed).

However, all of that gets thrown out the window on game day and the players step onto the field.

With Strahan getting older, having an OLB that can rush the passer is a good thing. It also helps the Giants; as now, they aren't in dire need of a LB. They can afford to do what we can do; draft for best value; not for need.

Now for the good news: Tying up that much money into their LB core (with Pierce and Emmmons) they are unlikely to draft a LB.

Which means, we could potentially trade down (Patriots will be looking for a LB....maybe SF too).

This helps us out by opening up a little more options.

Ding Ding, it takes one less team looking at LB in the first and as you said could help in the idea of us trading down and still getting the guy we want, if he is a LB.

And now we know right where to throw the ball against the Giants! Right into the area that Arrington was supposed to be covering!

You really can't comment on whether or not they "overpaid" until we see the actual details of the contract. Some agents, the Postons in particular, agree to ludicrously backloaded contracts knowing full well their clients will never see the $15 million roster bonus in the contract's sixth year because they can laud the overall value to potential clients because the intial years/money are all most media outlets ever report.

You're actually quite right about that. There are always a few plays in a game when LaVar thinks that he sees a SportsCenter opportunity. If you bait him correctly you can get a huge play out of it. The bigger the stakes (i.e. a crucial 3rd down late in a close game) the more likely you are to catch LaVar out of position.

Huh.....What is this??? a Poston client getting paid Again.

Its funny how the perception of the Poston's is so different from reality. They get the job done. Reading a thread about a week and a half ago you'd think the Poston clients were inflicted.

Peterson and Arrington down.......Woodson and Law to go

I agree. This could be a chump change contract.

It all comes down to how big the bonus is- and the first years roster/salary pay. That is ALL that he is sure to get. I do not see the Giants pulling a Snyder and paying all that much of a signing bonus.

The thing I find funny is the strict disciplinarian Tom Coughlin with first Plexico Burress and now the "rogue" Linebacker Lavar Arrington.

To get the $7 million-per-year, Arrington and the Giants agreed to load the deal with incentives, ESPN.com's John Clayton reported. Arrington, who will get a $5.25 million signing bonus, will receive a base salary worth around $3.7 million a year. With reachable incentives, Arrington can make $5 million a year and with maximum performance, he can take the deal to $49 million if he completes the seven years of his contract.

$5.25 million SB?????

So much for recouping the $4.4 million he left on the table with the Commanders. The Postons should lose their certification for being freakin' idiots.

Why don't you look into the real numbers and check back with us again?

A $5.25 million dollar SB and a incentive laden contract isn't really a "huge" $49 million deal.

They're terrible agents. How much have they cost Arrington alone?
