Giants: Favorites out of the NFC East? : eclipz928 : 5/2/07 3:01 PM
from a Giant forum.
In my [slightly biased] opinion, Giants are in much better shape than I originally thought before the draft. We are already hearing players such as Pierce and Umenyiora say that they like Spagnuolo's schemes and are excited about it. We got the needed depth and competition in the secondary with guys like Ross and even Dockery battling Madison and Webster for a starting spot at corner. There is still a question about the linebacking core, but I like Mitchell and the move of Kiwanuka, although experimental, does have the potential to work out (he did pretty well last season when he dropped back, even grabbed 2 interceptions). Giants did have one of the best run-stopping defensive lines in the league last year (Fred Robbins really stepped it up, and Barry Coefield although still young and raw shows alot of promise for improvement).
On the other side, if Gilbride is dedicated to pounding the ball with our backs and taking some of the pressure off of Eli, the offense should be more efficient. Judging by them bringing in Droughns and attempting to sign FB Leach, I think they will re-committ to running the ball, which Brandon Jacobs has been able to do as well as Tiki (and sometimes better) in short spurts. Passing game won't be a problem. In limited time, Diehl did a decent job protecting at LT and will compete with Whimper to sure up that spot if a trade for a vet is not made. Toomer, Moss, and now Smith should provide Eli with plenty of short-yardage/possesion targets, which the the Giants obviously didn't have last year.
If you look at the rest of the division, it will take some time for McNabb and the Eagles to get back into form because of the injury. Kevin Curtis is a downgrade from Stallworth. I project that Westbrook is due for an injury, especially since he will shoulder the load early in the season, and the Eagles who overuse him still have neglected to find a suitable backup for him. Additionally, there already is and there will continue to be tons of media distractions for this team if they don't succeed early, and Reid will likely still be dealing with trying to keep his kids out of prison. Defensively, Dawkins is ancient (they lost an opportunity to replace/help him with Merriweather) and Trotter has visibly lost a step. Spikes can be a difference maker IF he returns to his 2004 form, which is not likely considering his injuries and age (will be 31). Cowboys gotta learn a whole new system under Wade Phillips and will need maybe 2 years to turnover, especially if young Romo is not the right QB for this team. The Commanders are an overspending joke, and may make the playoffs on talent alone but just can't outcoach anyone within the division (even Coughlin). Jason Campbell still needs alot of fine tuning.
The Giants are in surprisingly good position to come out on top of the division with a much easier schedule and the hope of fewer injuries. Eli is a much better QB than what people think and there has already been a stated commitment to lowering his turnovers - the focus this year will be to take some of the pressure off of him. The defense can only perform better after the dismissal of Tim Lewis. The Giants won't be spectacular, but I just don't believe the rest of the division (particularly the Eagles) shows the potential to rise up and be better than this past mediocre year in the NFC. Thoughts?
Cowboys are : TuckerF : 5/2/07 4:13 PM
the most overrated team in football. They have major problems on their offensive line that Leonard Davis cant solve and he may be another problem. They have no pass rush other than Ware; Their corners aren't that good they have no Free Safety and Roy Williams will never learn coverage skills. Romo had as bad a second half of his season as Eli but no one noticed. Their receivers are the same age as Toomer or older. They started 71 of 22 players all year and barely made the playoffs.
What do you think their record is if they lose Flozell Adams, TO or Glenn, Ellis, Ware, Newman and Henry to injury at the same time? They would be lucky to win 4 games.
I'm less afraid of the Cowboys : Enoch : 5/2/07 4:21 PM
because their record last season is mostly a reflection of them having the best injury luck in the league. Ellis was the only starter they lost for a significant amount of time. Odds are that they won't be so lucky next year.
I'm still favoring Philly. They've got a great OL, and the strongest overall defense in the division. (As for Dawkins potentially slowing down, I'll believe it when I see it.) Yes, I was probably wrong when I said above that their DL outclasses the Giants. But, if Kearse is healthy, they're at least in the same conversation.

The Giants will win the NFC East this year : Paulie_Jr : 5/2/07 8:53 PM
Contrary to what the media thinks I believe that the Giants are the team to beat this season in the NFC East. There are several reasons why the Giants are a lock:
1. Dallas has lost one of the greatest coaches in the history of the NFL. Wade Phillips is no Bill Parcells, and runs a diffrent offensive and defensive system than Parcells. Although They plan to keep the 3-4 defense, I believe that the Cowboys will play some 4-3 looks in addition to a base 3-4. I also believe that Tony Homo will play like he did at the end of last season, and remember that Terry Glenn and T.O are each another year older.
2. Philadelphia stupidly traded out of the first round with a chance to add to a stockpile of DTs (Alan Branch) or give McDoink another weapon (Robert Meachem) and they traded with a team in their own division!!! And then their first pick was Kevin Kolb? Not just a QB but one that was predicted to go in the third round? I believe that the Eagles had one of the worst drafts in the NFL, and probably the worst draft in the NFC. They lost more than they gained this offseason, since Spikes will most likely re-injure his achillies due to it never properly healing. They also lost Michael Lewis and Darwin Walker, two good players on the right side of thirty, not to mention Donte Stallworth. Andy Reid is concentrated on his sons' legal problems, so he will be distracted this season.
3. I like what Washington did in the draft considering the fact that they had only one pick higher than round 5. But I don't think that Jason Cambell is the answer at QB and I believe that the Skins did the same sign old vetrans crap that they do every year, so they have no chance.
4. Tom Coughlin. Yes, Tom Coughlin. I believe he is the right coach for the job, and I believe he finally has the coaches and personnel he wanted from the beginning. 2 big backs (Jacobs and Droughns) his old Offensive Coordinator (Kevin Gilbride, Jags offensive Coordinator 1995-1996) and a defense with big linebackers, physical corners, and the best pash rush in the NFL. Don't forget that Coughlin brought the Jags to the AFC Championship game twice in a row as the head coach of an expansion team. All the peices are in place for a Superbowl run. Go Giants!!!
