Giants Game: Early snap to Romo

I'm rewatching the game, and late in the first quarter, Romo is in shotgun and he's calling out different orders. Gurode snaps the ball and Romo isn't ready for it.

Al and John both say it was a miscommunication and Romo wasn't ready for it.

But it was actually a heads up play by Gurode. The play clock was down to zero and Romo was still making calls, so Gurode snapped it.

I like that. Our center made smart move.

Yeah-our OL was never on the same page under Parcells-what a d/f a year makes.

Head's up play? I'd rather take a five yard penalty than have a turnover.

I noticed that too. But, maybe he still shouldn't have snapped it with Romo not set under center. Risking a turnover b/c of a delay of game penalty is a questionable decision.

I like the idea of getting the snap off, great play by Gurade... It's Romo's job to ALWAYS know where the play clock is at...

:hammer:

How heads up would it be if he did the same thing when Romo stands next to the ref to take a timeout for a last second FG? You don't just snap the ball because the playclock is winding down.

Or better yet, let's say that Romo doesn't like what he sees and decides he's going to call timeout but Gurode snaps the ball before Romo signals.

Or how about if there's a man in motion and Gurode snaps the ball and it hits them instead?

Point blank, if you think that the center snapping the ball without some sort of input from the QB is a good thing, then maybe you haven't watched much football and seen things go horribly wrong.

Unless Al is being coached to snap the ball in that situation, it was a bad thing to do.... And if he is being coached to do so,, that is bad coaching...

Worse, if Gurode snaps it, and nobody else knows what's going on, you could get Romo killed. Imagine a 275 pound DE with a full head of steam right into the small of Romo's back.

Lose the ball, lose Romo... Yeah, very dumb play. It seems like this was a little problem in the preseason too, I remember a couple of times it seems like Romo wasn't ready.

What he said. That was just dumb on Gurode's part.

Don't get me wrong, if this were on the road and the crowd was very noisy, maybe I could see it. Gurode might think that he missed a signal or something and snap it because the clock ran down, but that's why homefield is an advantage. That shouldn't happen for the home team.

I am going to place my vote with this train of thought.

It's the same sentiment I expressed in another thread. The potential of a turnover far outweighs saving 5 yards. *Especially* in this new day and age where we do not have to fear the third and long as we once did.

Please explain to me why the OL would be down in their stances if Romo was just standing next to the ref to call a time out?

It would be pretty hard for him to snap the ball if they're all just standing around waiting on the time out.

I didn't say this was a realistic example, it would be a boneheaded move, but to snap the ball when your QB isn't even looking just because the time is running down is as boneheaded as it gets.

And really, it's not that far out of reality considering the Warner fake timeout, direct snap to Marshall Faulk.

It is if you think about it. They are two totally different situations. Warner was at the line, then stepped out to pretend calling a time out. The center knew he was snapping to Faulk.

If Romo is just standing next to the ref to kill time, the team wouldn't be on the ball.
