Head's up play? I'd rather take a five yard penalty than have a turnover.
bingo
if the center wants to make a snap without the qb calling for it he better know the other team is offsides or have 12 men on the field. 5 yds beats a turn over, especially in the backfield, anyday

It is if you think about it. They are two totally different situations. Warner was at the line, then stepped out to pretend calling a time out. The center knew he was snapping to Faulk.

If Romo is just standing next to the ref to kill time, the team wouldn't be on the ball.

This is the part you are getting hung up about, the reality of a QB standing next to a ref and the team still being lined up?

You've never once seen an offense get set and then the QB walk over to signal timeout because they didn't like what they saw, even before it became an unsportsmanlike penalty to fake a timeout? All the timeouts you saw were directly behind the center? You've never seen a team line up to go for it and then change their mind as the clock wound down?

Unless Al is being coached to snap the ball in that situation, it was a bad thing to do.... And if he is being coached to do so,, that is bad coaching...

who's Al?

Certainly, I have.

But the situation you originally described is what I questioned. You were talking about purposely running time off the clock before a FG attempt, or whatever. Not a QB stepping out to call time out because he didn't like the defense.

It's the same sentiment I expressed in another thread. The potential of a turnover far outweighs saving 5 yards. *Especially* in this new day and age where we do not have to fear the third and long as we once did.

That play was discussed on the Yakuza thread...I still blame Romo for that one, he has to be looking for the ball with 1 second left on the play clock..I agree that a turnover is worse than the penalty but there is no turnover if Romo is looking at the clock or the ball which is what he should be doing with a second left...Plus Gurode is not looking at Romo so he doesnt know he isnt looking for the ball with a second left...I would have snapped it also...

It is a good move becuase when the center \snaps the ball when the defense is over the line it is a free play... so if we turn it over.. free play... if we get a drop pass free play... if we get a defense off fguard and make a td wahooo

that flexability to the center is a smart move

I'm rewatching the game, and late in the first quarter, Romo is in shotgun and he's calling out different orders. Gurode snaps the ball and Romo isn't ready for it.

Al and John both say it was a miscommunication and Romo wasn't ready for it.

But it was actually a heads up play by Gurode. The play clock was down to zero and Romo was still making calls, so Gurode snapped it.

I like that. Our center made smart move.

Sorry dude. Not smart.

Now if, in the huddle Tony said something like "the snap is on two. Everyone stay set. No one jump. If they jump on one snap the damn ball!!!" then I could see some sense in it. Otherwise, you're risking 7 the other way just to avoid a 5 yard penalty. With the potency of our offense, a five yard penalty is mince meat.

you know what makes this good. Romo collects the ball and then fake tosses towards Barber. It didn't fool anyone but I find it hilarious that in a situation where hes caught completely off gaurd that he has the nerve to fake a toss. I think its just hilarious that no matter what hes looking for something out of it.
