Gibbs took the Skins to the playoffs his second season. Parcells took the Cowboys to the playoffs in his first season. Basically the same team that went 5-11 three straight years and without the benefit of a first round draft choice for two of those years.

Those teams had no direction, we weren't building anything back then, we were clinging to aging vets from the glory years. BP has this team going in the right direction. We have young players on defense, which was playing well. We just need to acquire more talent and see what kind of run we can do next year.

its true, Gibbs has one of the worst rosters in the league yet they are on a tear, swept us, and made the playoffs. Furthermore, they only have about 4 offensive plays to choose from, like the original Tecmo Bowl:
1: handoff/pitch to Portis
2: deep ball to Moss
3: WR screen to Moss
4: Playaction to Cooley

Greg Williams should be up for assistant of the year IMO, if there is such an award. He's been one of the big differences and he has crap as far as personnel. I wouldn't give a nickel for a player they have in their front 7 and Taylor is about the only player I'd take from their secondary.
Also, obviously Gibbs knew what he was doing in getting Moss for Coles. Probably the biggest and most impacting move of the offseason. Without Moss, Wash has 3-5 wins all season tops!
Half the games Wash won, they were dominated or physically beaten all day but Wash found a way to win.
Wash came ready to play when it counted at the end of the season.
The difference that has separated Wash as being a playoff team vs those of us who aren't is can ONLY be ascribed to COACHING.
No one can dislike the whiner Gibbs or the evil empire any more than me but I have to give them their due. They have a crappy team but got it done because the coaches schemed well and motivated the players and that's what they get paid to do. They did it, our coaching staff couldn't despite superior personnel. So there it is. I hope they lose 2000-0 next week but I bet they win.

Let's see how Gibbs fares in his 3rd year back. Our problems stand with the O line and Kicking game, otherwise, these two teams are fairly equal.

The Commanders don't have a ton of talent but they have Clinton Portis, Santana Moss, Marcus Washington, Sean Taylor, Chris Cooley, Chris Samuels,Randy Thomas, Jon Jansen and Cornelius Griffin.

Those are some pretty good players. A pretty solid roster. By no means a crappy team.

Throw in some good coaching and that explains their season.

I certainly am no Parcells apologist, but this team has been upgraded at every position since BP came aboard...

Such a crappy team with a 1,500 yard runner, a 1,400 yard receiver, a 70 catch tight end, and a QB with an 87 rating and 22 touchdowns. Yeah, really crappy.

Agreed about the coaching-but their pass rush/defense is rather weak. McMahon had almost all day to throw the ball, and receivers were open everywhere.

Wait - hasn't the consensus been that the Commanders had MAJOR unachieving defensive talent, their draft concentration under Norv ... never mind the C. Bailey trade ... the guys that are left are coming into their own nowadays as most 3-6 year vets do if you hang onto them long enuf.

Better give it up to the O coordinator that's found a way to throw the timely "bomb" like kids do on a schoolyard when it counts. Brunell and Santana Moss were very fortunate pickups for them.

In a very crappy NFC to boot.

If this team existed 20 years ago, they would be doormats.

Why does one have to be a good coach at the expense of the other? Can't they both be good coaches?

I do think that Bill was set behind by the awful QBs that were here. Jerry wanted one of those guys to step up, and just when it looked like one of them might, he gets busted by the league for a personal problem. That really derailed things. Now, they are getting on track again.

If your corners were Walt Harris and Ade Jimoh, your opponents receivers would be open, too.

Oh, wait....the same crappy nfc that you couldn't make the playoffs in?

It doesn't matter what happened 20 years ago. Thats one hell of an argument though.

see the quote above about their play selection, that will help explain this phenomena...

the point is....:go stack their roster up against just about any team in the league and I don't think you'd be very impressed. The point is that the players have gotten it done because of the coach's system and coaching.
Heck, I think there are more players on Arizona's roster that I'd take than on Washington's. Once again, that is props to Gibbs though because he went and got who he wanted and molded them into a successful team.

I agree...they are both great coaches and any team would love to have them.

I think you guys getting rid of Quincy was a mistake, it looked like he was about to catch on. He was improving.

Drew Bledsoe is a nice stopgap, as is Brunell. Both these teams could be in trouble when they both go.

Yep-we suck too. I admit it.

It's funny how everyone's calling Seattle and Chicago "over-rated", but hardly anyone ever notices how MEDIOCRE the NFC East really is. Only Lindsey Lohan is more over-hyped than this POS division.

You just totally contradicted yourself. Why are you knocking the play selection for the "phenomena" and then giving Gibbs props?

Are you arguing that the play/talent was better 20 years ago?

It's hard to measure in hindsight. Maybe one day we'll look at Portis like we do Riggins and you'll look at Keyshawn or Glenn like you do Irvin now.
