Gimme's Game 1 observations

Bottom Line ... Parnell has shown to have more than Young.

I thought so Thursday. I'm not sure about during camp, although I read several times about Young struggling.

I need to go back and just focus completely on Parnell's play, though. I might have missed something.

Would be nice to have another successful convert from defense, like we had in Mark Tuinei.

I thought McGee was pretty good in the pocket. He leaves it early sometimes, but he stood in there quite a bit and took hits while completing passes. He didn't feel the safety blitz coming, but other than that, his pocket presence was fine.

I also thought he was very accurate. The interception he threw was caused by the receivers cutting each other off. It also appeared to me that he did a nice job reading the defense and finding the open receiver. There were several instances where his receivers didn't complete the pattern or run the right pattern that might have made him look inaccurate, but he was on target and made several very good throws.

Best game I've seen from him, and he definitely showed progress from last preseason.

I have doubts about McGee. First the good: He has a good enough arm, and seems to be OK with his accuracy. He's a good athlete. He can make some plays. With good protection he executes the plays pretty well--slow on the reads, but maybe that'll come.

My concern is this: Since he's been with the team, he performs OK with good protection. If he gets pressure, he almost always reacts the same way. He scrambles away from the line of scrimmage, or he scrambles right. A couple of times he's scrambled toward the line of scrimmage. When he does that he tends to drop his eyes and becomes a running back. This first preseason game, for the first time I remember--he scrambled toward the line of scrimmage and completed a short pass. I consider that to be an accident.

Compare his scrambling to that of Romo: Romo invariably scrambles toward the line of scrimmage, keeping his eyes downfield. Romo is a huge threat when he scrambles, and often makes throws within three yards of the line of scrimmage.

McGee often winds up 12-15 yards behind the line of scrimmage. I've been waiting for him to fix that since he's been here, and don't see any sign he will. If he doesn't fix it, he will give away too many possessions to ever be more than a backup QB. And he may not even be a backup QB...

If I'm a DC defending against him, I would overload the left side of the DLine (McGee's right) in a passing situation. I'd like my chances...

I am not impressed with McGhee. I do think he is clutch but he gets himself into clutch positions too often. He looks very slow with his reads to me. ONe thing you saw from Romo from the first preseason games he played is that he made quick decisions.

His decisions seem at snail pace!

Then last year his decision making was slower than watching paint dry or waiting for a month of Sundays......the year before that was like expecting pigs to fly or chickens to grow teeth.

So we have seen progress?
