Gimme's roster breakdown

I bet we do because Coleman can play CB and he's being counted as a Safety right now.

So it's like having four and four and one swing man.

As an aside, I can't imagine Romo being traded.

I think a lot of this will depend on how well Watkins plays. If Watkins shows any ability I think he'll be on the field a lot... and Coleman will be the odd man out.

If Jones shows any coverage ability I'm keeping him over the 32 year-old.

I haven't heard an update, but if Henson's injury is worse than it looked, they may put him on IR and sign Kerry Collins.

Also, how can you not put Ogbogu on the list?

Ogbogu is next to cut, imho.

So is Coleman.

They were cheap gets to help fill depth positions and neither was even active every week before all the added draftees. Considering last years draftees through round 4 jumped them on the depth chart it is hard to imagine the guys we drafted through 4 rounds this year not doing the same.

Ogbogu is no longer with the team.

Coleman is a 32 year old corner who was moved from corner to safety because his cover skills are lacking.

Not what I want out a corner.

Jones at least has shown some ability to cover the slot receiver.

Jones has shown the ability to run with the slot receiver, not cover him.

Although Coleman's cover skills are not as good as they once were, I'll be surprised if he's not still better than Jones. Plus, Coleman is a better special teams player. Plus, Coleman is a Parcells guy, who the coach has raved about in the past.

Age will not keep him from making the team. The only thing that will is if he has deteriorated in skills to the point where players like Jones are clearly better. I'll be surprised if that's the case.

Coleman or Jones, I don't care. We learned a valuable lesson 2 years ago when nearly all our corners went down in the first game or two. There will be 5 true corners on this team.

I don't see Coleman making the team, but if he does, toodles Beriault.

We do not have five true corners more talented than what we have at safety IMO, so it would not be in Dallas' best interest to keep a less-talented corner just so we have enough bodies at the position, especially when Coleman can be as good a body at the position as Jones AND help out at safety.

Last year, Parcells was worried about the quality of the depth at that position after the top three. Reeves proved he belonged; Jones has not.

I just don't think Coleman can cover anymore... If he beats out Watkins/Davis for the FS position then keep him on the team... if not... out he goes.

Well, you might be right as far as his coverage ability goes. He's certainly not the player he was a few years ago.

If he's not a better option as a fifth corner than Jones or able to win the free safety job, then I could see Dallas cutting him. I think he'll prove able to do one of those two things, though, but I could be wrong about his level of deterioration.

Hey, I'm all for Coleman on the roster IF he can beat out Davis/Watkins and whomever else shows up. And he may... I dunno. But if he can't I just don't what him taking playing time away from a younger player that has more upside potential.

In my heart I would hope Watkins can win the job outright but that is probably pretty low odds at this point.

I'm for the best players to win, but if I'm honest, I wish we had the players to take 6 CBs and only 3 safeties.

I preached for that prior to the 2004 season, and we got burned bad for it. I don't want to see that happen again.

Right now, the only safeties we have that are slightly secure in their jobs are Roy, Davis and Watkins. I'd like to see Beriault NOT because I have some inflated view of his potential based on some preseason games, but because I think he can contribute on Special teams. Unless Coleman or Pile can do the same on ST, I don't see a place for them on this team.

If Bariault injures his knee again, I would suspect an injury settlement.

I think Nate Jones has a good chance to make this team as a 5th corner/safety, just because I don't know that I really think Coleman has anything left. Too many bars in Dallas.

If Coleman makes the roster ahead of Nate Jones, I don't believe he would be taking playing time from a younger player with upside potential. I don't really see any upside potential in Jones (maybe with one of the rookies like Butler).

Now, he would be taking playing time from those type of players if he starts at free safety, but I only believe he's keeping that spot warm until one of those players is ready.

This was a well thought out post. Props.

I think Al Singleton is going to be here this year.

Peterman's situation is IMO one of the most interesting of all players- hard to predict whether he's a starter, a backup or cut.

The safety situation is also a hard one to predict- a lot of moving parts.

Shanle could make the team because the rest of the backups are liabilities in pass coverage. Burnett's health could make Shanle expendable.

Boiman is supposed to be pretty good in coverage and, like you mentioned, Burnett could play a role there if healthy. I also won't be surprised to see Carpenter as one of the two nickel LBs because of his coverage abilities.
