The reason why is we would create an incredibly athletic left side of the OL for running screens and for pulling and getting out at the perimeter to make blocks in space. Warmack won't help us do those things at all. I also think Cooper is even more lethal than Warmack at getting out on the second level - you can youtube a video where he just flies out and absolutely destroys a LB in the complete openfield. He actually looks like an agile Safety coming out to cut the legs out of a RB. You can also see one where he pulls on a run and ends up blocking about 50 yards down the field. He is incredible for at playing in space and that is the name of today's game. That is why NO is so lethal on offense.
I believe the threat of screen with Tyron and Cooper would be so high that it would scare teams away from trying to blitz us at all for fear of us getting the OL downfield and outflanking them way downfield with Smith and Cooper picking off one player after another as the RB keeps running downfield.
I also believe the power differential between Cooper and Warmack is overstated. Cooper was still physically developing and after playing the season at 295 I think he was up around 311 at the Combine. I really believe this kid is going to be a multiple selection All-Pro.
The crux is how much would I be willing to give up. I'd definitely give up a fourth and I'd probably begrudgingly give up a third. I don't think we can give up a 2nd rounder again this year after last year's foolish tradeup. It is too bad we have so many needs that we can't adequately fill in FA .
Cooper is a gamechanger for us if we manage to acquire him. I"ll have my fingers crossed on draft day that OGs fall as they usually do.
Awesome post.
The key team is Tennessee. If TEN passes on Warmack, it's almost a foregone conclusion that one of the guards will be there for us at #18.
