One has nothing to do with the other. He needs to silence the critics about his game on this forum. He was not good as a broadcaster, he could be league MVP and not change that.

They need to cut back on that guy's caffeine intake, he bounces in his seat like a kid at times and is far too animated.

Brandt: Witten will silence those who criticized his broadcasting in '18

That has to be one of the dumbest YouTube video titles ever.

Some people criticized Witten's play before he retired.

Some people criticized Witten's broadcasting ability.

So. It is 'understood' Witten will silence those who criticized his broadcasting, with his on-the-field play coming out of retirement, even though some people had already criticized his style of play BEFORE his broadcasting career started?

If he lost a step we wouldn't even notice because he was always so slow. Witt was still in great shape as a broadcaster. It will take extra work to get better than before he left, but I'm sure he's extra-motivated. If he can give us 400-600 yards, 3 TDs and great blocking then I'm happy. Anything more is a bonus. Our young guys are going to get production too.

He's always gotten open because of his football knowledge, never speed. On the Y-Option, he forces the defender into making a choice, and he breaks depending where they play him, and he almost always breaks the right way.

Witten was not always slow. He could run well when he was young and he caught plenty of deep seam routes to prove it.

Witten's importance to the offense was out of necessity, his relationship with the QB and owning the Y-Option as the safest and surest route on the team. If he needs to silence his critics, this team is going nowhere.

Witten used to be one of the top two options because the WR corps was not that strong and just from the view of route running, this corps has done an 180 on that. And I am assuming this will still be a team trying to reach that magic 50% on run calls so his value is more important as a blocker.

The Cowboys get to play NE again, think Belichick will be targeting Witten as the player he needs to erase. He'll beg them to feature him.

In order for Witten to "silence his critics" he'd have to be featured and return to pb status. If that happens, this team sits home in January. This better be about Elliott, Cooper, Gallup, Cobb and Austin moving the ball down the field and averaging close to 30 ppg. Hard to do that with a chain moving TE.

Indeed, he could move pretty good when he came into the league. I shouldn't have used the word never. But I thought seam routes are for zones. It doesn't really take speed to beat zone coverage.

Yes, he did. For a guy his size, he had quick feet and he was good at keeping them under him. The biggest rap on him was he wasn't a tackle breaker but all you have to do was watch how he caught the ball and what he did with it to know he understood his role perfectly, get to the marker and do not fumble, anything after that was gravy. He always seemed to be very aware that they would go for the ball.

Witten was, and I assume still is, the master at using his size to shield the defender and give his QB a safe target. He is also the owner of one of my top 5 all time Cowboys plays and I am not talking about the running with his helmet off, which was a great play. That one play when he pointed for the back to come around his left side as he did a shield block showed an awareness and calm on the field that few have. Got bodies flying in different directions and he points the way for his RB while throwing the block. I love that play.

My biggest wish is that they not wear him out blocking.

Use the younger TEs for that.

Throw to Witten and conserve the energy.

He is a fine weapon when thrown to.

Play action to let him get a start at the secondary off the line.

Use him differently and you have a different player.

Witten has always been a possession receiver.

Like Novachek was to Aikman.

Plus he blocks better than about anybody playing the position.

If Tony Gonzales was required to block like Witten..

he would never be the all time receiving TE.

The offense will be more effective this year for sure.

heres my issue, yes hes reliable, but is that needed now?

we are hopefully installing a new offense and its time to look forward. Witten isnt going to light the league on fire, or get faster, or even younger. to me, this might slow down the other guys and as i stated the TES are young and need time and they did come on. Will Wit give us that?

did anyone miss the penalties?

does Dak need him as a security blanket?

Can Witten offer to draw coverage? if hes left alone can he make the first?

Be a redzone target... something he’s never been... I’ll be happy with 55 receptions 450 yrds 2 TDs. On par with his current talent lvl.

If they utilize him inside the 10 in the RZ, he might be worth bringing back just for that. He was as good as Dez in creating the mismatch close to the end zone.

The thing that excited me the most about increasing the scoring was this WR corps and bringing him back with his vet savvy down there. That and changing the play caller.

I think the Cowboys have as good a crew in the RZ as any team and a damned good dual threat QB down there. The talent is there, just need to implement and exploit it better. They could be the hardest team to defend in the RZ.

I don't know if he can do it well enough but I would like to see if Elliott can throw the ball well enough to run some wildcat in the RZ.

Other than helping Zeke..

Dak is going to get sacked less.

Wit being gone last year greatly contributed to Dak and 50+ sacks.

Part was the OL injuries..

part was Linehan's stale playcalls.

but alot was that Witten was not open in the short zone for a quick completion and 1st down.

No sack..no holding the ball.

No stalled drives.

No holding calls.

How many FGs were missed becuz we are kicking from +50?

We all want the exciting plays for the highlite reels.

But how many points did we lose not extending drives and going backwards instead.?

Way too many.

Witten is going to help everything on offense.

People tend to want to talk about what he is not.

I prefer to talk about what he is.

Good.

And multi-effective.

It's sort of like having a wife or old GF.

There are something's they are not as good as when you first met them..

but they sure can cook and clean.

As my dad used to say..

"That ain't hateful"

Randy Moss- 16 years in the league 226 receptions of 20+ yards.
Jason Witten- 15 years in the league 138 receptions of 20+ yards.

Not saying Witten is Moss, but to say Witten could not move is a stretch. How many times did we see Romo on the move and find Witten deep.
