Going for it on 4th down

Why doesn't every team do what Philly is doing on 4th down with that big rugby scrum? It's unstoppable.

I read somewhere that Hurts squats around 600 lbs. Plus he has a body built like a RB. There probably aren't very many teams that are comfortable with their QBs being pushed from behind by 2 big TEs into a pile of 300 pounders.

Not exactly sure of our success rate, I'm not a numbers guy. But we've had some success. My question is, before Mike became our coach, we didn't go for it much on 4th down. Do you like being more aggressive, would you have rather punted the ball in some instances?

What goes through your mind when we're about to snap the ball on 4th down??? Please give your thoughts...
I don’t like it at all when its early in the game and you’re in your own territory….

Especially when you’re the favorite. Don’t need to be handing inferior teams the breaks they need.

There is a certain spot on the field where it’s a better proposition than a FG attempt though.

I don't think he'll hold up long term, just my opinion.

Mike spent time learning analytics in his year off. Going for it on 4th is generally the better bet in many situations. Coaches haven't done it because they get criticized for it when it fails and get very little credit when it works.

League-wide, this will continue to be the pattern. In a few years, every team is going to have an analytics guy in the box providing real time probabilities in various situations.

I made a post before you could earlier today, I was so proud of myself! The story about Washington 21 day practice!!!!
I was actually thinking when I saw your thread, "this is usually something that Risen would have posted". You get a like from me, which might have otherwise gone to Risen. Congrats for stealing a like from that likes hoarder lol.

Honestly I would go for it any time you are at 4th and 1 or less even if you are on your own 40. If you are at 4th and 3ish past your own 50 I Iike going for it every time. I think there are a lot of opportunities to extend drives and I like how McCarthy tends to be more aggressive.

The 4th down call in the Giants game was a little risky for my taste, but what was the down and distance? I forget but I remember it being more like 4th and 2+ yards which is a little too aggressive for my liking especially on the first drive.

I like going for it 4th and short across the 50, especially when it's a longer field goal or possible punt situation. When it's on the opposite side unless it's 4th and inches or we need points to overcome a hole I really dislike the decision. However, I would rather play to win vs not to lose.

we have had more failure. He nearly blew the Giant game. He DID blow the Packer game. We got lucky beating the Patriots last year after he failed on 4th. I recall a game last year when the Chargers went on 4th down 3 or 4 times, missed each time, lost by less than a score and missed the playoffs by one game.

McCarthy and other coaches need to stop this nonsense of being so gung ho all the time. Patience is a virtue. Its a game of ground control.
When a coach elects to kick an extra point to tie at the end of regulation, and then his team loses in OT, are you consistent? Do you say he blew it in that game by not going for two?

How did he blow the Packers game exactly?

Didn't like going for it on 4th in the Giants game. It was way too early to act desperate, and way too risky considering where they were as far as field position. You have a good punter and you can pin them in inside their 10. Plus if you were going to go for it on 4th down, why would you not run the ball on 3rd and short instead of passing. Whole thing was stupid. That with Moore calling so many early pass plays - thought they were trying to give the damn game away, lol.
I agree, also there are so many things that should factor in on going on 4th down.
I think you have to establish when you will or wont before season starts.

Thing is if you fail it is like a turnover, so if your ok with giving other team ball at 50 or in your territory
then fire away.
early in the game is usually not good.
mike has made some bad choices on when and where.

Going for it generally increases the teams chances of ultimately winning the game. So I am in favor of it when that is the case.

I did not mind going for it on 4th in the 1st qrt. It was still early in the game that you could overcome if should they fail to get it,

Absolutely, I love it. Context matters, and most of the time, I'm in favor.
