More than anything, we need to nudge the talent level up wherever we can, while adding more quality depth on defense. We're going to rotate DLs, so the trick is going to be maximizing talent across that top 8-9 guys more than doing so across our top 4. Those two things are necessarily the same things.
In the secondary, we can upgrade CB3, CB4, CB5 and, realistically, maybe S2 and S3 in this upcoming draft. We can do many of these things with reasonable signings and with 1st-3rd round draft picks, if we do it right. And then those guys later in the draft and in FA are the guys who may end up surprising us, but who are basically developmental players who fill our the roster or can possibly help us on STs.
So, that said, if we see a S we think would be among the top three players at that position on the roster, maybe top 2 from day one, I could easily see us taking him. Unless we let Carr walk, I'd have a hard time seeing a CB go that high, but a guy who'd challenge for nickel or dime snaps I could see coming as early as the second round if he's a heck of a player. Otherwise, though, I think the target ought to be upgrading a few of those top-8 DL spots with the first three picks. That's assuming we also add at least one quality DL (maybe two) in VFA, too.
