Going secondary in the draft?

Cody Prewitt looks nice to me. Haven't seen a lot of him, but from what I have seen I like his insticts and he seems to be a pretty natural ball-hawking free safety... and perhaps most importantly he should be there when we pick in round 3.

I wouldnt be surprised if we took best DL Round 1, or even traded down a bit and went CB/S in Rounds 2+3. This is after 1-2 signings on the DL in FA.

CB is pretty deep and I haven't seen much film of him but Alex Carter would probably be a good fit in Round 2. No idea about safeties but we need to come out of the draft with 1 more

More than anything, we need to nudge the talent level up wherever we can, while adding more quality depth on defense. We're going to rotate DLs, so the trick is going to be maximizing talent across that top 8-9 guys more than doing so across our top 4. Those two things are necessarily the same things.

In the secondary, we can upgrade CB3, CB4, CB5 and, realistically, maybe S2 and S3 in this upcoming draft. We can do many of these things with reasonable signings and with 1st-3rd round draft picks, if we do it right. And then those guys later in the draft and in FA are the guys who may end up surprising us, but who are basically developmental players who fill our the roster or can possibly help us on STs.

So, that said, if we see a S we think would be among the top three players at that position on the roster, maybe top 2 from day one, I could easily see us taking him. Unless we let Carr walk, I'd have a hard time seeing a CB go that high, but a guy who'd challenge for nickel or dime snaps I could see coming as early as the second round if he's a heck of a player. Otherwise, though, I think the target ought to be upgrading a few of those top-8 DL spots with the first three picks. That's assuming we also add at least one quality DL (maybe two) in VFA, too.

If we do not take d-line in the first round, I'd really like to get the CB from Michigan State.

Absolutely... Trae Waynes is the number 1 rated CB in the draft though. How much would we have to move up to get him? 11-17 ish? Too rich for my blood. I am an MSU alum and have seen every game of his but this is strictly business.

I know this is unpopular, especially after Claiborne, but the way I see it our 4 biggest needs are 1 tech DT / 1 DE / 1 CB / and a FS. I look around at the free agent pool and there is no one who can be had cheaply that would really be an upgrade in the secondary, but there are a few guys I see that might be good on our d-line. Therefore, if the guys are there, wouldn't it make sense to think about going secondary say 2 times in the first 2 days and try to sign some reasonably priced guys for our d-line in free agency?

I expect them to get pass rusher in free agency.

They have options at 1-tech DT. Josh Brent and Ken Bishop are physically better than Hayden but both need playing time in Marinelli's scheme.

The big question is whether Carr takes a pay cut or they release him. If they release him then CB becomes a huge issue. I would expect them to get free agent replacement.

With a pass rusher signed in FA and Carr either remaining or replaced with an FA, then the draft can be BPA with a strong eye towards adding more talent at pass rusher and CB.

I think the Safeties played better this year than fans believe. What looks like a bad angle by a Safety in real-time is often the fault of another player after review. In Marinelli's scheme the Safeties play in a way that is dependent on other players like LBs and CBs doing their job in a specific way. The LBs often screwed up but it appeared that it was the Safety's fault.

Having said the above about the Safeties, they do need more developmental players at that position.

DeAngelo Smith, the ex-Cowboy and current Michigan State assistant, says Wayne is very fast and will shock people at the combine. I don't think he makes it out of the top 20.

At the same time, I'm not sure how much I can trust a guy on the topic of speed who lost to David Buehler in a foot race.

I think the biggest problem with our safeties is they both belong at SS. We need a true ball hawking free safety of which there are several in the draft.

Haaa

I'm in the Josh Shaw camp myself. Great size, good speed, physical, strong football IQ and can play safety as well.
Think his public embarrassment was an isolated incident, he had a great reputation prior to that, just hope Garrett and co., see it the same way.

True... but I don't see us staying a zone team with Marinelli gone. Other than our #4 CB we just don't really have the personal for it... man sometimes I wish the draft came before free agency.

P.S. I also wouldn't be surprised if he was the highest paid CB in free agency this year. Everyone else is too old or too beat up. Being one of the few CBs worth anything is certainly going to make his value go up.

hey dude wake up Marinelle is not gone signed for 3 years

what about Drummond from MSU as a FS? I'm not very good as judging safeties unless they are just awful.

If we came out of this off-season with Rahim Moore and Perrish Cox in free agency and someone like Quentin Rollins or Josh Shaw in the middle rounds, I would be very happy. I know Damarious Randall fairly well and would be thrilled if we landed him. Wake Forest's Kevin Johnson is growing on me but it's looking like he will be at least a 2nd round pick.

I really like Green Bay's nickle back Micah Hyde as a free safety candidate but he isn't a free agent for 2 seasons and I don't see the Packers trading him to a conference rival like us.
