The entire scouting staff was gutted when Jimmy Johnson left. Ackles, Mansperger and Wooten were all gone. That had as much to do with any of that as the coaching changes. Sorry, you cannot tell me for a minute that Dave Campo was a player in the draft room.

Since Jones is incapable of independently judging talent, he depends on who speaks the loudest.

From the looks of things, he is listening to his old cronies just as much as he is Jason Garrett. You hear the man from practically every draft since Garrett has been on board referring to one player or another (and even coach hires) being attributed to the likes of Lacewell and Switzer.
Ackles was already gone. Lacewell took over in 1992. It was a decent draft. So was 1993 with Jimmy, Jerry, and Larry as the trinity. Once Jimmy left Lacewell was not as good. Outside of Larry Allen, he was just not good. I do think Ackles was better.

Funny how when Jones was discussing the idea of passing up Floyd, he referred to Kiffin's suggestions. Not Garrett's.

All we got were he and Ciskowski looking disappointed in the war room when Charlotte, the red headed grandson and others strolled in and out.

Hoss Jerry has a red-headed grandson named Charlotte?

I'm glad I don't pay a lot of attention to the extended family...

If the personnel man takes direction from the head coach, why is everyone talking about McClay taking different players, being not so hung up on character, etc? It shouldn't make any difference if it's all up to the head coach anyway.

I just hope he takes a more modern, analytical point of view on these guys.

They need to start getting into more advanced analytics as a whole.

I like the article... Don't know how true any of it is, but if what the guy speculates is even half true, then it can only be a good thing. The opinion isn't any worse than others who choose to take an opposing view.

I am the culprit who introduced the idea though, so don't be mad at them.

Thank you for noticing that I am consistent. I take that as the nicest compliment paid to me on this forum in a long time.

Hey! I've given you a nice compliment!

It was a long time ago though...
OK- carry on.

Watch the war room tape. Garrett was not consulted on anything. He was allowed to sit in the war room to keep Charlotte company. When he wasn't talking to her, he was pouting like a kid that didn't get to go for ice cream.

I hope Will McClay changes some things up. The Cowboys have gambled way too much on small school projects and have failed miserably on them. This goes back to when Jeff Ireland was here as well.

Hopefully all these guys can get on the same page this year during the draft because it looked like a total cluster @&$! When they were on the clock last year in the first rd.

If we trade down from 17 to 31 this year we better get more than just a 3rd rd pick back.

Im not trying to pick a fight with anyone but what does anyone think has happened? Honestly?

This title he now has is a position that has shifted gears a number of times recently.

The guy who wrote the article seems to think mcclay just got here or something? He has been here since 02 where he has worked in pro scouting and mostly scouting and coaching in the arena league where most of his pro career has been.

Are they under the impression Will McClay is going to command the room and make the picks? What are they smoking?

IMO, Will McClay jumped the ranks because ciskowski has been so poor and McClay has been credited with finding some guys to fill in during the season. If I remember correctly McClay has been handed the credit for finding
Laurent robinson and tony fiametta.

I think those are what has moved him up the charts. I imagine last year and this years injuries on defense and finding guys who can fill in quickly like Ernie Simms.

What in the world is this birddog character talking about? More streamlined front office what does that even mean?

they can call it whatever they want and they can give anyone whatever title they want. The last weekend in april Jerry and Stephen will be operating the phones and doing whatever they want.

btw mcclay was hired by lacewell I believe. HI Five.

So...what about the Lacewell years minus Jimmy?

Ackles was sharp. All in all, Jerry Jones had the best group under Johnson.

Under Lacewell as the head honcho? Don't make me laugh.

Key thing about McClay promotion is that two NFL teams wanted permission to interview him for their staff before that. Permission denied, promotion given. That's a factor for sure.

Kind of curious.

Looks like since Judd is getting "demoted", could he be going the way of John?

I don't pretend I know the inner workings, just going off what I read.

Will McClay has risen to a very important spot in the Cowboys organization and hence, an important one in football.

I wish him the best of luck. He's paid his dues, he has worked with Shack Harris, who I think knows talent.

He is a lot more in touch with the modern game than most Jones could tab.

I do not have an issue with that site.

They try.

They are very passionate, I will give them that.

But everything they present is based on a lot of real evidence. Work crunching numbers (waste of time, but more power to you) and so on.

Is it "homer"? Sure. But at least they work at it.

You gotta good point. At least they have some research to go with the sunshine pumping . Much better than the usual sunshine pumping that consists of everything is great and going in the right direction. Of course the 8-8 records kinda deflates most of the arguments .

I believe the things McClay has touched here have turned out very, very well.
He was given credit for our pro scouting hits that had previously been non-existent.
Then it was supposedly his first year in 2013 touching the draft and that went very well.

Not sure the article is more than speculation but I like seeing results rewarded and think that has been the case here.

I feel good about our personnel guys and our draft prowess.

I don't feel good about our ability to stay healthy or innovate as an org or coaching staff.

If you go back and reread other articles from last week, you'll see that some teams have been interested in McClay. Tom has already been there and done that.
You would also find that it is really just a switch of titles more or less. Tom will be on the road gathering the information and feeding it to McClay to make the board.

That's just as important of a role in my mind. Call me crazy.

Maybe it's simply a way to Keep McClay around because they value his judgement and he and Tom make a good team? Just reading between the lines like everyone here.

The one question that all Cowboy fans should want answered is "Will the type of evaluation continue that landed Claiborne in Dallas continue?". I don't care who is running the show. I just want improvement. I think they totally screwed the pooch with Mo and all of these small school projects. These small school guys have been wasted picks and they offer a boom or bust potential that Dallas can't afford to gamble on.
