Get something that she will be safe in when(not if) she gets in a fender bender. I am not sure how safe a Civic would be, especially hitting a truck in Texas.

I would go with an SUV, maybe a Honda CRV or something.

Any thoughts? Something safe? I'm thinking a Chevy Colorado or Honda Civic.

well you want a car that is heavy enough in case of an accident - at least 3500lbs
4wd or Awd would be a good feature in case of ice/rain
high suv are rollover risks.
a volvo awd exists i believe but kind of extravagent
i would suggest a midsize subaru wagon.
they are heavy enough, not too high off the ground and 4wd is either available or standard.

SUVs these days are not really much different than cars from a protection standpoint. The one bonus they offer is a higher seat level which helps protect a little more from taller vehicles, but SUVs also have a higher roll over tendency.

True but it depends on the SUV. The smaller to mid-size ones are difficult to roll-over these days.
