Good job interview, but there was a red flag

I had a job interview that went pretty well, but I was surprised that they asked for my birth date, including the year. I'm not all uptight about my age, but I thought it was illegal to ask someone their age in an interview. That gives me pause. She insisted they only needed the info to create a login for me.

I'm feeling pretty good about the interview, except for that one thing. I thought age and religion were strictly off limits.

Under federal law, asking an applicant's age is not strictly illegal, but it is heavily discouraged by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission because it can be used to prove illegal age bias against workers 40 and older. However, state laws vary significantly, and asking for age or birth dates on initial job applications is strictly banned in places like Connecticut.
