Good stuff and Bad Stuff

Good:

First team OL: Holes were HUGE tonight for Barber and Jones. We were dominating the Chargers front seven. Romo had a ton of time.....well, he attempted three passes, but he had a ton of time.

Barber: Averaged six yards a carry. He again, bounced off tacklers.

Crayton and Witten: Big catches on the first drive.

Romo: Had no trouble picking apart the Charger D

Felix Jones: Wow. I really was against us drafting him over Mendenhall. But this guy was very good. He's a big play waiting to happen.

Miles Austin: Had some tough catches against the starting CB for the Chargers. Cason was on him most of the game. He displayed good hands, and broke a number of tackles. I'd like to see him get some time at third WR.

Tashard Choice: Slick runner. Will be a good backup to Barber. Yes, Barber. Felix has a position all his own.

First team DL: Dominated on two possessions. A stupid fumble by a guy that will never return a punt and a bad PI call cost us a shut-out by the first teamers. Even though they had the ball at the one, we did a nice job of shoving them back.

Zach Thomas: I really like having him on the team.

Mike Jenkins: Nice PBU against a tough receiver.

Bad:

Special teams coverage units. What happened here? This was one major area of concern for so many of us this offseason. I know Sproles is a great returner....but come on. This cost us the game.

Brad Johnson: I guess you can't blame him too much. But Romo makes quick decisions. Johnson seemed to not have the clock going off in his head.

Second Team OL: Ok....they came in pretty quick. And the Chargers still had quite a few starters in. But even when the Chargers put their second string in, the OL couldn't get any push.....they couldn't protect Johnson.

Martellus Bennett: Johnson had him for a HUGE gain on a seam route. Bennett dropped it.

Adam Jones: Rust Rust Rust

Tackling was horrid by our defense too.

Mat McBriar: Yeah...it's partially his fault on a couple of returns. He kicked em long....but they were line drives. He needs more air under the kicks.

Kevin Burnett: Bad game by a normally good player. He was pushed around today. There's a reason he's our nicklebacker.

Bobby Carpenter: I was ready to watch this guy redeem himself. Never happened. Again, he was shoved around all game.

Anthony Spencer: Invisible. Here's a guy that's supposed to push Ellis for starting time. Very quiet game.

Now, there's a lot to improve on. But there's a lot to like. We have a good team here. I'm not sure our second-teamers are as bad as they looked tonight.

There's also a couple of extremes in camps. With Parcells, they were pretty physical. With Wade, they're pretty mild. I hope this mild camp doesn't make our players soft.

Anyway, if there's a post already like this....mods can move. This took me a while.

Agree with everything but Spencer. He didn't play long, but looked really good when he did. Made a very nice opposite side tackle from behind.

I saw that...not bad.

But he was in for most of the first half. I don't think we came close to pressuring their QB. I expect him to dominate against second stringers.

Maybe I expected too much. Or maybe I just wasn't paying attention. That happens.

Also on the money. Other than I think Johnson would do just fine with TO, Witten, Barber, and the giant of a line. But I know I'm in the minority on that.

That's true. Most of these guys would do much better if they were inserted in the starting lineup.

Tank also played well, lots of push up the middle.

And Burnett was abused by the rook Hester. First Hester crushed him on a tackle, then Hester juked Burnett out of his socks.

As average as Carp played, he still outplayed all the other backup LBs_Rogers, George, etc. Dallas has very poor LB depth. No thumpers, playmakers or pass rushers in the bunch.

I totally agree.

So many are concerned about our depth.

I don't see it.

Look:

-Tank is technically a second stringer. He sat out with the first team.

-We started Jenkins. He's, at best, going to be our third CB. Probably fourth CB.

-Adam Jones will shake off the rust.

-Burnett looked terrible tonight. But there's a reason he's our NLB.

-Free/McQuistan will be ok with other studs next to them.

We'll be fine. Barring some catastrophe, we'll have good backup players in with our normal starters. That will only make them better.

the only thing that matters is no one was injured. It was a sloppy game with a ton of penalties and confusion on offense from the young guys but everyone is healthy.

It was a scary moment when scandrick was dinged. He looks to offer alot to this team and larry brown was raving about him during the pregame show.

Right on about Scandrick.

He impressed me tonight.

He scored major points with me when he came back into the game at the end.

I always call the first pre-season game the Ugly Bowl for a reason. This one lived up to its reputation.

The first team offense's short time in the game was good and they looked sharp but when they went out then the Boys stuttered and stumbled most of the rest of the game. The special teams stunk, the second and third team defenses couldn't stop the Chargers scrubs and the second and third team offenses melted down and could do little worthy of mentioning.

The two rookie running backs did well and showed a lot of potential. Amendola laid a couple of eggs. Right now the Boys are little more than a disorderly mob fumbling its way around but they will probably be better next week.

At least the pressure to have the perfect season is off early and they can now focus on football or whatever it is they have been thinking about.

Scandrick showed some possibi;ities, as did Stanback but Bobby Carpenter didn't do anything very memorable. Jenkins had a ghood play.

Typical Ugly Bowl.

Again, when the Chargers scored their second TD...the one after the INT....it was their first string...vs mostly our second stringers. No Roy, Hamlin, Henry, Ware, Ellis. The Charger announcers even commented that they kept their first string in a little long because Rivers didn't get a lot of looks.

Two things stuck out to me, poor special teams and LB play. Burnett stunk up the place along with Bobby, mr. 1st round bust, Carpenter.
