Good value in this mock.

Ginn and Sears are reasonable choices at that point of the draft. I'm thinking that early choices might play to this draft's strengths at WR and CB. (Not necessarily in that order)

IMHO, Ginn Jr. has NO business going in the 1st round. OSU fanboys can proceed to flame.

Ginn Jr. would be a waste of a pick to me, I like a guy like Jarvis Moss would definitely make a lot more sense to me IF he's still on the board.

I would rather have Sidney Rice if he falls that far or Robert Meacham. Ginn just seems too small to me for todays NFL.

I don't believe that selecting Ginn at #22 would be the best value for that pick. He is a smallish guy who didn't perform well at the combine. There are still a lot of better players available in that draft after we pick.

I would rather take (in the order they are in the mock): CB Aaron Ross, S Michael Griffin, DE Jarvis Moss (projected to OLB), OG Ben Grubbs, OT Tony Ugoh, or OG Justin Blalock.

I just don't see Ginn being a big time NFL WR. He is a good player but not worth a first round selection IMO.

I will not argue that he is a smallish guy...however it is hard to perform well at the combine when you have a foot injury from the bowl game.

We're trading down.

At this point I think that would be the smart move barring a player falling to us.

However that takes partners to do...I would also not rule out a trade up. Not saying I would want to give up picks but Jerry has tried to trade up or try to trade back up in the Julius Jones draft (tried to trade back up to get Kevin Jones) and in the Ware/Spears draft...thought they were going to miss out on spears and tried to trade up to get him.

Now if for some reason we could not trade up or down and we took Ginn I would not be upset and I will tell you why.

At this point there is not a must have position to draft. The closes at this point would be FS but I think Watkins can pan out at the position with an improved pass rush and a year of exp under his belt.

We also have two older WRs and normally a WR takes a year to get used to the NFL.

Ginn could be used in returns and he could be used in a 3 wr set on occasion.

People say he is small and will take time to learn the game, he would be given the chance to learn the game and improve on his route running abilities.

Look at these two players and what they did their first two years, I chose them as they are both smaller WRs with speed and elusive running abilities.

Santana Moss.

His first two years he had a total of 473 receiving yards and 4 TDs.
He actually had more yards in the return game with 495 yards and 2 TDs.

I think he has turned out ok since then.

Steve Smith

His first two years he had 1026 receiving yards (only 154 his first year) with 3 TDs (zero his first year).
He actually had more yards in the return game with 2002 yards and 2 TDs.

I think he turned out ok.

So I would not mind him if we took him. Nobody knows if he will turn out to be like those two down the road but I think he can wind up being pretty similar.

I think that makes a certain amount of sense Brain. Which is pretty good for you considering it's Sunday morning. ;)

Excellent points BP, now that the O-line seems to be squared away, I wouldn't mind seeing a WR taken with the 1st pick.

I was not high on Ginn because of his relative inexperience at the position, but you make a strong argument.

We're trading down.

How do you see a trade down scenario? To the end of round 1 for a 3rd?

1> Chris Houston (CB)
2> Staley/Ugoh (OT)
3> Samson Satele (C/G)
3> Baraka Atkins (OLB)
4> David Clowney (WR)

Remember, it is BPA.....not draft for need. We are in the position for BPA.
I wouldn't mind this pick at all. Then we have a young WR in which we will eventually can use . In the time he is learning the NFL he can contribute on some passing plays, reverses, PR, KR. Also he was aCB out of HS and his 1st year at OSU.

I agree with BP.

The trade partners have gotta be there.

Jerry will consider moving up, moving back, and standing pat. One of Jerry's strengths is that he always considers all of the angles....

It often takes WRs a year to get acclimated and the Cowboys will almost certainly need a new WR who is ready to play in 2008.

And Ginn is frighteningly fast...

I'd like that kind of move, personally.

It must be noted that although I could see the reasons behind it and I would be ok with it.

I do not see it happening at this time. I don't think Jerry will take a WR in the first round this year.

Rice "falling that far?"

:lmao2:

Rice isn't sniffing the first round. I'm pretty sure he will "fall" to us.

Unless you are talking about Rice falling to us in the 2nd, which is a possibility. But he is not going in the first round and he is not in the top 5 WRs. He could be the 7th taken.

I think a CB is more likely than WR.

----

A general comment (not directed at BP or anyone else in particular):

For the sake of argument, we could say that there are 23 positions on a football team (the 22 position players and the nickel back).

With their 1st draft choice, the Cowboys will draft only one of these 23 positions.

Which means that the Cowboys will not draft 22 of these 23 positions ...

Averaged across these 23 positions, there is a 95.65% base-rate chance that the Cowboys won't pick a given position. [22 of 23 = 95.6522%]

So if somebody says, "no way the Cowboys will draft a Right Guard #1 this draft" ... that fan has roughly a 95.6522 of being correct.

The (baserate) chance that the Cowboys won't pick an X or Y WR is 91.3% [21 of 23 = 91.3043%].

Predicting which position the Cowboys won't draft is relatively easy pickings -- chances are very good that you'll be right.
