Such a scenario is unlikely. ( no 12-4 team has ever missed the playoffs. The closest was the 1985 Broncos who went 11-5. There were only five playoff teams per conference then.)

Regardless, it's a compromise. There is no perfect system, but I think giving HFA to the team with the better record is a better solution than giving it to the division winner regardless of record.
I personally like division rivalries. And I think if you change the situation as suggested, then the division, and hence division rivalries, is basically pointless.

That's a good point to consider since divisional rivalries in many ways help make the NFL as popular as it is. But here is where I'll diverge from you.

If the division winners are guaranteed a playoff berth, then the fight for the division crown still means something. It may not have the added benefit of an extra home game in the playoffs, that's true, but the rivalries in essence will be preserved

In addition it could add more spice to the last couple weeks of the regular season if the wild card seedings were more fluid.

I doubt it passes, though. I could certainly live with the status quo, so it's not really a major issue for me.

Is there any question that the Jags were better then the Steelers?
Is there any question that the Giants were better then either Seattle or Tampa Bay?
Seed the teams based on how good they are; not on whether they win their division or not. Why should a team that say wins 12 games have to go to a team that only won 9 and that barely?

Agreed, I like this new proposal. The team with the better record gets the home game, regardless of seeding or division win status.

My ideas for the commish:

1) Go to the college replay system. All plays are reviewed by a booth official.
2) Stop the international game and stay with a 16 game season
3) Eliminate the running clock. If you go out of bounds the clock stops until the next snap. These 12 play 10 minute drives move the game too fast. ( i know they want to stay in the 3 hour window, but they have considerably shortened the actual game and added time for more commercials.)
4) Eliminate the force-out rule. If you can't call it consistently, it has to go.
5) Ease up on the defense. The game is too heavily favors the passing game.

Agreed. Why play in countries that don't even understand the game. Canada and Mexico are fine. But other than that, I don't see the point. And NO regular season games should be played outside the nation.

What's worse is that most countries can't really afford to have football teams because it's expensive to get equipment, fields, etc. and most of that money is tied up into soccer. I'm not sure what international expansion can really do for the NFL. Foreign players are not going to come over to the NFL in droves like they do in the NBA (and that hasn't been a good thing either for the NBA) and they're not going to have a franchise in a different country.

Personally, I like it the way it is. You have have something to show for winning your division.

you do get something.......a spot in the playoffs.

I actually like this move......Let's say the you go 12-4, but unfortunately, 2nd in the division as the team ahead of you goes 13-3. Why should you be penalized for being in a Division with a better team and go on the road to play a 9-7 Division winner?

1. All 4 Division winners make the playoffs

2. Top 2 Non-Division winners make the playoffs

3. Top 2 records of the 6 playoff teams get first round bye (even if they are in the same division)

4. In each round, the team with the better record gets home field. I do not care if you won your division....if you are 9-7 or 8-8, you don't deserve a home game over a 10-6, 11-5 team....

I don't like this idea.
A 11-5 team isnt neccessarily better than a 9-7 team. Look at the opponents in the AFC we had this year and what teams the Bucs had to play. Compare MIA, BUF, NYJ, NE with HOU, JAC, IND and TEN and you cant really say that the Giants deserve homefield over the Bucs here. Giants are 3-1, Bucs are 1-3 in interconference games. Of course you can say, thats because they are better, but I dont think thats the whole story. The same argument counts when you compare the strength of divisions.

I dont see the need to change the system. If the Giants want homefield they have to win the division, thats all, every team starts at 0-0.

The Giants played the Cowboys, Commanders and Eagles twice.

The Bucs played the Saints, Panthers and Falcons twice.

Who do you think had a tougher road to win the division?

I'm beginning to think that Roger Goodell is a moron. Add to it his lame brain idea of putting together games in Europe. This is an American past time, and an American game.

Let's keep it that way. I'm already sick of Roger.
I agree about Europe. If they were so interested in American Football, NFLE would not have folded.

The one about the POs is harder to answer. On the one had you should reward a team for winning their division, but seeding the teams in order of record accounts more for WCs in a tough division, and winners of weak divisions...
