Wow. Just freaking WOW! This guy is the biggest disaster to ever hit the sport.

He is going to ruin the game I love, and it makes me absolutely SICK.

Oh, and a lockout is a certainty. That's a huge reduction they want the players to take, and the players have so much more money than they used to that they can afford to wait it out. You could see this coming even several years ago.
How about millionaires stop whining about a little paycut, bunch of whiny *****es.

Its a Multi billion dollar industry. The players have the right to get the highest cut of that money they deserve.

Fair enough, but I don't won't to hear them moan over losing a little money.

it's a shame that with the ability to make that kind of money you can't see it for what it is and keep pushing yourself out of the market in another game of "contract one-upmanship".

I don't know about physical play has been let out of the sport. Looked to me in the playoffs, that the Saints were plenty physical and turned up the intensities with progressive events. They did some end of play smacking as well. When the Refs allowed them to play...they did. When rebuilding came to New Orleans, the tough and team players stood up. Heart came through, AND it was physical.

TV money is not going to keep growing like it has, so the only way a lot more money is going to come in is from raising ticket prices.

What percentage of the clubs revenue comes from tickets?

It's got to the point over here in the Premier league that the income from TV far exceeds the money paid for tickets, and don't forget that the top teams here play 20-25 home games a season.

A lot of the TV revenue comes from overseas (especially the far east), I guess that's the major reason behind trying to get the rest of the world interested in Football.

The BBC showed Live coverage of the Superbowl for the second year, with Rod Woodson in Miami, and Alex Smith in London.

I don't have that big of a problem with players griping about money as long as it doesn't effect the game and the emotion levels brought to the field on Sundays.

Once players go out there and act like they could care less to play is when i'll say enough is enough.

Or if Goodell gets a no 3 point stance rule I may stop watching as well.

But as long as the intensity levels are high I have no problem with the players doing whatever it takes to get top dollar.

Football mimicks a lot of things in life....I wonder if Gooddell would also eliminate all mat action in wrestling due to injuries occuring there?

The money issue is what it's been allowed to come and there is really zero shot that they'll get that turned around. If both sides don't want to lose tons of money next year by having to sit out they'll come to some sort of middle ground where the players will still get loads of money but the owners will still feel like they've got plenty of power and say.

The far more concerning issue from that is the idea that anyone is even remotely considering the idea of removing 3 point stances. That would be absolutely terrible. That would be like watching them line up in a flag football formation.

I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate that idea with a passion.

We all know that in today's world, sometimes good old fashioned logic flies out the window. That stated, how could an economicly driven business, attempting to come out of a stagnant economy, totally dependent upon leisure types of spending, NOT want to insure continuity in income? Sound smart on either side?

It would drive me away from the sport to the point where I wouldn't want to watch.

Goodell wants the NFL to be like the Big 12 conference.

Nothing but spread offenses with no defense so it looks like the circus is coming to town.

That's what I'm thinking as well and I hate the entire idea of it. Outside of the hitting that would still be in the game (Which I'm assuming they're doing all they can to remove that as well at this point) these games won't look much different, score wise, then a lot of flag football league games.

actually very little money comes in from overseas TV.

You missed the point. My understanding on it was the poster talking about the European soccer leagues, and how they make a killing on TV rights from non-European sources. That's why the NFL head honchos are so dang gung ho on playing overseas games. Not that I agree with that, but it is a method of bringing in increasing revenues, and an attempt to increase popularity of the sport worldwide.

Also:
While I think the three point stance thing is pretty bogus (unless they can come up with stats showing that it leads to lots of concussions), the NFL has to be very careful about injuries in the game. It is a blood sport, and if they are not careful, some lawyers or government agencies will end up stepping in. And no one wants that.

The rookie salary cap is a non-issue. Both sides want it. The players want the money to go to contributing vets and not 50/50 possible bust rookies. Owners want the same.

I have no problem with Player's salaries or anybody else's for that matter going up.

This is the United States of America and person should be able to make as much money as someone is willing to pay.

Also, I really think people need to stop looking at things from their perspective.

Just because a person makes millions of dollars doesn't mean they aren't "underpaid" based upon the compensation of others that are in their industry and how much money their "talent" generates for others.

my point isn't they can't or shouldn't be able to maximize their salaries. we all should. but look at superbow ad revenue - down this year.

commercials 90% worthless and the revenue once generated from that, gone.

there's going to come a point when you outprice yourself from the market by this desire to keep doing more than what you had before.

never happen?

ask the NHL if it could happen.

The strike basically turned Hockey into a minor sport. The players and owners need to remember that.

Valid point about intrusive government meddling- it could happen.

The owners main concern is future new stadiums. Its very clear there will be very little if any assistance from cities in the future so it will all have to come from the owners. They want to build up a stadium fund and to do that they are going to have to get concessions from the players. Though its mostly rumor its been consistent that multiple teams actually lost money in the last year. Now the economy is really down but at the same time pretty much everyone is saying the recovery is going to be slow and long. The players better be smart enough to see this or the owners will indeed do a lockout.

i agree. talking about stabilizing the pay structure to a point where recession and good market alike has little effect on the existence of the league as we know it.
