Idk, man. I thought Campbell was a pretty solid hire. Dude had the "it" factor written all over him. I'm listening to the Pittsburgh post game press conference right now and the way Brian talks, he reminds me of a young Bob Stoops. Good energy, confidence, strong presence, articulate, but not overly complex. He sounds like a coach. Does that translate to the field? His first year as OC was stellar, although McCarthy was calling plays. Year two he was handicapped with a bad line and a lack of firepower in the backfield. They did enough to win games with Cooper Rush at QB, but how much of that is attributed to BS? That's a question I can't answer, but those inside the organization can.
I think the initial shock is starting to fade. Still pissed they didn't even try to make it work with more qualified candidates, but I can see why he's the guy. He was successful in Seattle. People point out his offensive rankings, but he's always relied on a prevalent running attack to control the game. You aren't going to light up the stat sheet with that philosophy, but if it's effective, you increase your chance to win games.
Russell Wilson ran him out of town and proceeded to fall off of a cliff. In 2020, Brian's last year in Seattle, Wilson posted 4,212 Yards, 40 TDs, and 13 INTs. Seattle was 12-4 that season, finishing 1st in the west but fell to LA in the Wild Card round. In 2021, Wilson went for 3,113, 25, and 6, and hasn't had a comparable season since then. BS moved over to Jacksonville as part as Urban Meyer's staff which was a disaster all around. He's been in Dallas ever since. We don't know what sort of input he had throughout the week with prep work, but we do know he had an opportunity to pick the brains of Kellen Moore and Mike McCarthy. Say what you want about their coaching styles, but they have strong offensive minds, and I'm sure BS picked up a thing or two in the last three years.
To be clear, I'm still not happy with this hire, but I'll keep an open mind about it. He's Marty's son and I have a ton of respect for coach Schottenheimer. Maybe he surprises us. I'm far from optimistic, but I'll openly invite being proven wrong. Best of luck, Coach Schottenheimer. You have a helluva tough job to pull off. I hope you can.
