Question: If the 2016 NFL draft was today, is Dak the first QB off the board?

Gosselin: There's a reason Dak was the seventh quarterback taken in the draft. There's also a reason he's having the success he's having in Dallas. He's playing with the best offensive line in football and with a fellow rookie who should win the rushing title. If Dak Prescott was the first overall pick and went to the Rams, he wouldn't be having the success he's having right now. If Jared Goff was a fourth-round pick and went to the Cowboys, I think folks would like what they are seeing from him. In the NFL it's all about going to the right situation at the right time. I don't think Joe Montana would have been the same quarterback had he been drafted by Detroit in 1979. I don't think Emmitt Smith would have been the same running back had he been drafted by Cleveland in 1990. It's all about being in the right place at the right time. Dak Prescott is clearly in the right place for him at the right time.

Such a simplistic outlook deserves a simplistic response.

Matt Cassel. Brandon Weeden.

Jared Goff couldn't beat out Case Keenum.

This assumes all things are equal. That is one of the biggest mistakes on this board.

If player A were on team 2 instead of team 1 he'd be doing the same things. Or in the case you are suggesting, these other spares indicate Dak is special.

Now i might agree he is special, but it is not because Cassel and the lot could not run this offense.

My feeling is a guy who can look off options until he finds the open man, while staying calm, and also changes plays to attack the weakness of the defense and does this as a rookie indicates he has qualities others do not. And that includes people that have played in this league. And even ones who have shown some success.

Dan Marino wouldn't be Dan Marino if not for being drafted by the Dolphins.
Michael Jordan would be Micheal Jordan if not for Phil Jackson, Pippen and the Bulls.
Aikman wouldn't be Aikman if drafted by the Packers.
Jerry Rice wouldn't be Jerry Rice if not drafted by the Niners...

It's goofy and simplistic. It can be used to diminish or discredit any persons achievements in life.

Re-read the first sentence in the post. Of course not all things are equal, it is just a response to what Moose is suggesting. I don't think Jared Goff would be looking this good if he just simply switched spots with Dak.

So Joe Montana wasn't actually that good?

Troy Aikman wasn't either.

Brady sucked too, I mean he had Bellichek.

Marcus Mariota has a similar situation to Prescott-great oline and rushing attack. His team is 3-4 and stats are worse than a year ago.

Goff sucks because he isn't ready not because of his circumstances. You put Brady there with Gurley and they have five wins minimum.

I think Goose's bum hurts because he thought Dallas crapped the been by not taking a qb in the first.

Maybe if the same criteria applied during the pre-draft vetting process.

Dak played in the SEC with an overmatched O-line and his best offensive target was a WR who ran close to a 5.0 forty and won't do anything in this league.

Gosselin: There's a reason Dak was the seventh quarterback taken in the draft.
There's a reason Romo went undrafted too.

Goose is implying that the general opinion in the NFL is that the other six QB taken ahead of Prescott are all better players. But before Zeke even set foot on the field, NFL people were impressed with Prescott.

Adam Schefter (8/23/16): I spoke to a couple of different people this week, who, when they'd heard all this Dak Prescott conversation, went and looked at the film of the guy. They were blown away at the decisions he was making, the skills he demonstrated, looking downfield, playing like a veteran. You could say, "It's preseason." That's what I said. I talked to a couple of people and asked, "What do you think? Is this overblown? Are we getting too excited over a guy after two preseason games?" And they went and looked at the film and said, "This guy has got it. He's got it. They've found their quarterback of the future." If they did hit on that pick the way that other highly intelligent people think they hit on the pick, they're set for the next 12-15 years.

Your right, no Zeke. Our running game was still amongst the best.

We lost 12 games so I imagine our team was trailing a lot.
I'm not saying Dak has not exceeding everyone's expectations but most credit Romo's season in 14 to the running game. Got to be fair with the same reasoning in this case as well imo. Troy was great and displayed pinpoint accuracy but with no Emmitt would have been much different in the 90s. Call me old school but two things make a team successful a great running game and a solid top ten defense. Everything else just seems to fall into place when those two are clicking for a team. Obviously the game has changed dramatically and passing and WRs have taken control of most organizations but for me there was no coincidence this team rebuilt the OL, is rebuilding the Def, and took Zeke this year. Either way or either opinion is fine as this team is in a very good place now and in the future....now let's go beat down some igglets!!
