I have to admit that I was a bit surprised by the Walden pick, but then again Wade definitely knows LBs who can fit into his scheme.

I'm sure that Wade definitely took a good look at Walden before putting him on the draft board versus the other talent we could have gotten at that spot instead (i.e., Rubin).

B/c nobody else on earth was gonna draft him, and we coulda taken a 6'2" 220 lb 4.35 40 safety from ASU and signed walden as a FA...

Agreed. We should have Josh Barrett on the roster right now, and we would have still gotten Walden.

At the least we should have traded down, after all that trading, would it have killed to make one more deal?

I expected a trade down with that 6th round pick during the draft, but watching the web cam they were never on the phone. You can't exactly trade down if nobody calls. I have the feeling Wade really liked Walden and I think he knows a thing or two about pass rushers.

I dont' get why he has a problem with the Walden pick. He, by his own confession, only knows about the top 100 or so prospects, so he's really only qualified to comment on those other picks. In the 6th round, pretty much all of those top 100 guys were gone, I don't understand how he has opinion one way or the other.

Listening to Gosse's interview on the ticket he actually looks at about 500 players and narrows that list down to 100 players. Walden wasn't even in his 500 player group.

My opinion: This is an example of Goose's self-promotion based on lack of knowledge.

That's my opinion as well.

And I think Walden was one of the 30 players invited to VR. In any case, he did visit with the Cowboys according to one of the reports I just read.

Wade must have been impressed. And Wade definitely knows how to evaluate LBs, IMO.

Don't put too much stock into Gosselin's grading system. He determines his draft grades on the average ranking of each of the players you draft, no matter where you draft them. So if you have a lot of early draft picks and reach on all of them, you'll get a better grade than if you have a lot of late picks and get great value for them. And filling or ignoring your needs doesn't even get factored into the equation.

Notice how he says "The Browns did remarkably well for not having a pick in the first four rounds" ... and then gives them the lowest grade of any team.

Dallas B
The Cowboys were cruising along with a great draft until reaching for LB Walden in the sixth. RB Choice in the fourth and CB Scandrick in the fifth were superb second-day selections. RB Jones will be a boon to the special teams.

At first glance, looks to be about the fifth-best grade he doled out.

http://www.***BANNED-URL***/sharedc...tories/042808dnspogosselingrades.3945201.html

I liked our draft overall. Time will tell if we could have done better with our second round pick though. I'll assume it was the right choice.

I have yet to see any of the non-biased sources rank Dallas's draft any lower than top five. Seems like this year was good bang for the buck.

Wasn't someone trying to sell John Sullivan as a first round pick a couple weeks back?

I like Sullivan and think that he grades out as a 1st round talent. Not a 1st round pick. Having said that, I still believe this. If you watch Sullivan early in his career at ND, he was a very, very good Center prospect. It's hard to look impressive when you have so many holes in the OL, as was the case last year. Short arms and light hurt him as an NFL prospect but he uses excellent leverage and is extremelly intelligent. To tell you the truth, he reminds me a lot of Step. I liked him a lot.

I don't know why we took that guy in the TOP of the 6th either.

We could have traded down if he was the one we liked.

From his own words only the patriots called him prior to being picked and that was to say they would sign him as an UDRFA.

So we could have traded down or stuck there and took one of these players instead...

John Sullivan C Notre Dame
Ahtyba Rubin NT Iowa State

Both would have filled a need of depth or at least given a chance to fill need of depth.
That doesnt include what the Cowboys might have been hearing from other teams.

Or maybe they just reached for him.

Junior Year:
48 tackles (34 solo)
14.5 TFL
11.5 sacks (school record, 10th nationally)
3 FF, 1 FR
1st Team All-Conference

Senior Year:
Played through turf toe injury all year
46 tackles (35 solo)
8.5 TFL
2 sacks
1 FF, 1 INT
1st Team All-Conference

Positives: Has an athletic frame with good upper body definition, long arms, broad shoulders and thick chest...Has the initial quickness and adequate burst coming off the right side of the line to chase down the quarterback from the backside...One of the hardest workers on the team...Productive coming off the edge, as he has that initial burst off the snap and the speed to surprise a lethargic offensive tackle...Shows adequate ability to read the play and shows good urgency to close once he locates the ball...Has minimal experience, but shows enough speed to drop back in zone coverage and should convert to linebacker at the next level...Uses his hands well to prevent tight ends from getting under his jersey, but will be instantly defeated if a bigger lineman engulfs him...Keeps his feet on the move, doing a nice job of avoiding the trash...Has effective pass rush moves coming off the edge when given a free lane...Adequate tackler in closed quarters, extending his arms to wrap and secure...Can also play on the kickoff team...Plays with a high motor...Goes low in his stance, extending his arms to wrap, secure and drive the opponent back on his heels...Has good field awareness dropping back in the zone...His pass drop skills and fluid backpedal could see him shift to strong safety at the pro level.

Negatives: Gets suckered out of position at times, having problems with misdirection... Will finesse rather than try to maul blockers, which results in him getting tied up by some blocks when trying to shed...Better flowing to the play-side than from behind...Drives for depth with good angle in his pass drops, but keeps his feet a little narrow handling the switch-off in the zone...Does not have natural hands for the interception...Struggles to grasp the play book and is a high rep type who can't learn well...Bit too stiff in his hips to cover receivers outside the short area as a linebacker...Marginal run defender whose lower body weakness sees ballcarriers consistently break his tackles or run over him... Gets powered over by the bigger blockers on running plays directed right at him...His lower body frame is woefully under-developed, as he lacks muscle tone in his quadriceps and calves.

Compares To: RODERICK GREEN-San Francisco...Like Green, Walden is strictly a situational pass rusher with minimal value otherwise. Even though he is built like a linebacker, he has marginal field awareness and lacks the loose hips needed to get depth in his pass drops. He is simply obliterated by bigger blockers on running plays directed at him, but shows a good burst coming off the edge to wreak havoc in the pocket. His inability to grasp the playbook will limit the amount of plays he performs in.

I do agree with the whole 6th round why thing.

Here is a list of players taken after our pick. Essentially, we took Erik Walden in the 5th round as he was the 1st pick in the 6th.

[+] 2 (168) Washington Commanders (From Rams ) Brooks, Durant P 6'0" 204 Georgia Tech

[+] 3 (169) Oakland Raiders Scott, Trevor DE 6'5" 256 Buffalo
I loved this kid. 19 Sacks in two seasons. Only played two seasons on defense. Ran a 4.54 and could easily add another 10 to 15 lbs. Would have been a great 34 OLB or 43 edge DE pass rusher. Kevin Green type guy.

[+] 4 (170) Kansas City Chiefs Richardson, Barry OT 6'7" 320 Clemson

[+] 5 (171) New York Jets Henry, Marcus WR 6'4" 207 Kansas

[+] 6 (172) Atlanta Falcons Brown, Thomas RB 5'9" 204 Georgia

[+] 7 (173) Houston Texans (From Ravens) Barber, Dominique FS 6'0" 210 Minnesota

[+] 8 (174) San Francisco 49ers Morgan, Josh WR 6'0" 219 Virginia Tech

[+] 9 (175) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (From Bears) Hayes, Geno ILB 6'1" 226 Florida State

[+] 10 (176) Miami Dolphins (From Lions) Parmele, Jalen RB 6'0" 224 Toledo
Loved this guy. Parmele is an interesting player. Rushed for 1511 Yds and 14 TDs in 2007and 1131 Yds, 8TDs in 2006. Averaged 5.46 yards per carry over the last two seasons. Not top compation but, he had games 93 yds, 1 TD vs Purdue, 88 yds vs #7 Kansas, 74 yds 1 TD vs Iowa St this season. 2 Big10 teams and 1 very good Big12 team, he average 4.55 yards per carry. He also had 33 catches for 285 yards over the last two years. He's also a pretty good punt returner. This year, he returned 20 kicks for 560 yards, an average of 28 yards per return. Basically, this player has accounted for 2228 total yards in 2007

[+] 11 (177) Cincinnati Bengals Lynch, Corey FS 6'0" 205 Appalachian State
Loved this guy. 6-1 205 lbs. He is not supper fast. Runs a 4.58. You may remember him. He's the one who blocked the kick against Michigan to win that game. Smart, good strong tackler. Good team guy.

[+] 12 (178) New Orleans Saints Mehlhaff, Taylor K 5'10" 185 Wisconsin

[+] 13 (179) Buffalo Bills Omon, Xavier RB 5'11" 226 Northwest Missouri State

[+] 22 (188) Pittsburgh Steelers Humpal, Mike LB 6'3" 244 Iowa

[+] 23 (189) Seattle Seahawks (From Titans) Schmitt, Tyler LS 6'2" 234 San Diego State

[+] 24 (190) Cleveland Browns (From Seahawks) Rubin, Ahtyba DT 6'3" 315 Iowa State As was mentioned before, this guy definatly could have helped us IMO.

[+] 25 (191) Cleveland Browns (From Browns through Eagles) Hubbard, Paul WR 6'3" 221 Wisconsin

[+] 26 (192) San Diego Chargers Tribble, DeJuan CB 5'9" 190 Boston College

[+] 37 (203) Philadelphia Eagles (Compensatory selection) Studebaker, Andy OLB 6'3" 251 Wheaton

[+] 38 (204) Miami Dolphins (Compensatory selection) Hilliard, Lex RB 5'11" 228 Montana Loved this guy. Hilliard is a RB but will project to FB for us. Hilliard is a tweener for RB but an excellent prospect at FB IMO. Hilliard is an exceptional blocker and has very good power. His agility numbers are better then those of Payton Hills, considered the #1 prospect at FB in this draft. He runs with power and runs hard all the time. Excellent goal line runner. He's scored 50 TDs during his career at Montana. This man has rushed for over 4000 yards and has a 5.o AYPC. Now, granted, it's DII and not a power confrence but it is still very impressive for a FB IMO. He will need to work on his receiving skills but he has caught 48 passes for 470 yards while at Montana. Great football IQ and a hard worker. Here's the thing that really impressed me about Hilliard. In 729 touches, the guy has zero fumbles.

[+] 39 (205) Indianapolis Colts (Compensatory selection) Garcon, Pierre WR 6'0" 210 Mount Union

[+] 40 (206) Baltimore Ravens (Compensatory selection) Nakamura, Haruki FS 5'10" 190 Cincinnati

7th round selections:

1 (208) Chicago Bears (From Dolphins) Baldwin, Ervin DE 6'2" 258 Michigan State

[+] 2 (209) Green Bay Packers (From Rams through Vikings) Flynn, Matt QB 6'2" 228 LSU

[+] 3 (210) Kansas City Chiefs Johnston, Brian DE 6'5" 276 Gardner-Webb

[+] 4 (211) New York Jets Garner, Nate OT 6'6" 334 Arkansas

[+] 5 (212) Atlanta Falcons Fontenot, Wilrey CB 5'9" 171 Arizona

[+] 6 (213) Jacksonville Jaguars (From Raiders through Cowboys) Washington, Chauncey RB 6'0" 211 Southern Cal Loved this guy as a back that could come in and give quality carries to spell MBIII.

[+] 7 (214) San Francisco 49ers Grant, Larry OLB 6'1" 235 Ohio State

[+] 8 (215) Baltimore Ravens Harper, Justin WR 6'4" 198 Virginia Tech

[+] 20 (227) Denver Broncos (From Buccaneers) Hillis, Peyton FB 6'1" 240 Arkansas How could this guy not have helped us? Might have the best hands of any back in the draft. Certainly the best hands of any FB in the draft.

[+] 21 (228) St. Louis Rams (From Commanders) Chamberlain, Chris DB 6'2" 226 Tulsa

[+] 22 (229) Tennessee Titans Williams, Cary CB 6'1" 185 Washburn

[+] 23 (230) Philadelphia Eagles (From Seahawks) Dunlap, King OT 6'9" 310 Auburn

[+] 24 (231) Cleveland Browns Hall, Alex DE 6'5" 238 St Augustine

[+] 25 (232) Atlanta Falcons (From Steelers) Zinger, Keith TE 6'4" 270 Duke

[+] 26 (233) Seattle Seahawks (From Jaguars) Forsett, Justin RB 5'8" 190 California

[+] 27 (234) San Diego Chargers Clark, Corey OT 6'6" 315 Texas A&M

[+] 28 (235) Seattle Seahawks (From Cowboys) Coutu, Brandon K 5'11" 187 Georgia This guy is an excellent prospect. Can kick over 50 with good accuracy, 58 is his long. Very accurate from 45 in. Is a real weapon on kick offs. He's going to help somebody IMO.

[+] 29 (236) Indianapolis Colts Richard, Jamey OL 6'5" 295 Buffalo

[+] 30 (237) New Orleans Saints (From Packers) Arrington, Adrian WR 6'3" 203 Michigan

[+] 32 (239) Kansas City Chiefs (From Giants) Merritt, Mike TE 6'3" 270 Central Florida

[+] 33 (240) Baltimore Ravens (Compensatory selection) Patrick, Allen RB 6'1" 198 Oklahoma

[+] 34 (241) Carolina Panthers (Compensatory selection) Schwartz, Geoff OL 6'7" 335 Oregon

[+] 35 (242) Washington Commanders (Compensatory selection) Jackson, Rob DE 6'4" 257 Kansas State

[+] 36 (243) Chicago Bears (Compensatory selection) LaRocque, Joey OLB 6'2" 226 Oregon State

[+] 37 (244) Cincinnati Bengals (Compensatory selection) Craig, Angelo DE 6'5" 235 Cincinnati

[+] 39 (246) Cincinnati Bengals (Compensatory selection) Urrutia, Mario WR 6'6" 232 Louisville Heck of a Fresh and Soph season IMO. Offensive change hurt him IMO. How could this guy not be worth looking at to develope?

ABQ...The reason Mario WR Lousiville fell was character issues.

Kid was soft and had major attitude problems if I recall. Many Claimed that Douglas was the Superior player and it seems the NFL Clubs agreed as he was taken higher.

He was benched multiple times for personal fouls during games and behavior and has suspect hands. Also suffered a turf toe injury his last season but coaches were more than upset with his attitude and personal fouls he committed on the field hurting the team.

Maybe he could turn it around and for a 6th or 7th you could take a chance on him. But I would say clubs must have heard even more about his attitude from coaching staffs to let him fall that far.

I can understand that. He did not like the new coaching staff or the offensive scheme changes. I was aware of this. Having said that, the guy caught 37 for 797, 7 TDs and an AYPC of 21.5 in 2005. He caught 58 for 973, 6 TDs and an AYPC of 16.8 in 2006. That's with Douglas, Barnidge, Michael Bush and Kolby Smith in that offense. That's not to bad, especially in the conference they play in IMO.

True, instead of Walden we could have grabbed Monk, a guy with potential at a position of need. Instead we took a backup OLB that no one else was probably interested in. Ugh, another very disappointing moment.
