Got good feelings about Will Allen

I honestly think (or at least hope) there is a better chance Will Allen gets cut before the end of camp than of him starting. He probably won't actually get cut, but with Wilcox, Church and Johnson being locks for the roster its not inconceivable that Jakar Hamilton or one of the other young guys shows some promise and they decide to keep him instead of risking losing him by sending him to the practice squad. And even though he was awful last year McCray will probably be kept around as well.

It will all depends on what Johnson looks like and if Wilcox is capable of playing at all as a rookie, but I don't see the point of keeping Allen around if he is 4th on the depth chart.

Allen's intended job is to be no more than the dime safety in place of McCray.

Any more, and that means Johnson can't play or somebody is hurt.

The whole safety situation is unknown, Will is just as likely as not to start, at least initially.

I was actually thinking the same thing. Poole comes to mind.

Every defensive player that leaves the Steelers falls off a cliff and then rejoins them a year or 2 later.

On paper we must have the worst/least experienced S group in the league.

On everyone's paper except for JJ's......EVERYONE knows our safeties are unproven, full of potential, slow, can't cover, run from the play, soft, etc....EXCEPT OF JJ...According to him our safeties for the last 15 years should have all made the pro-bowl...

This is easily our worst position on the team, and a glaring need. I really don't believe in any of these guys including church. His sample size of last year doesn't have me excited. Hopefully kiffin's scheme makes players out of these guys. He never did have highly regarded safeties at TB

Good post.

Allen has experience with the new defensive coaches. During training camp he can be a valuable teaching source for the young safeties. But, if he has done that job well, once TC is over his primary usefulness may be at an end.

:)

Hasn't had an interception in 8 years, and has averaged a fraction of a PD a year since then. Has also averaged less than 20 tackles a season since like 2007. Last time he was with Kiffin.. Kiffin benched him.

He's not good..

Wow.. great info. So basically we have a guy who is worse than Sensablo was.

It's ridulous really. Lol the delusions on this site makes me giggle.

Will Allen will be good for this team if he is a back-up. If he is a starter, then I have no good feelings about it.

I agree. Allen as a veteran backup who can show the young guys the ropes is the ideal situation.

Frankly, that's how I think it plays out. Obviously, nobody really knows, but if I had to guess I'd say Matt Johnson and Barry Church are the starters this year with Wilcox and Allen as the backups.

I do really think Wilcox is going to be a really good player and I think he will be starting by next season, but I think Matt Johnson is the best safety we have on the team, so I see him staying as the staring FS long term.

Wilcox and Johnson are the long term starters and Church is the third guy right behind them. That's how I see it playing out.

That would be ideal, imo, as well. I don't see Church being a good enough player to start for us long term.

I agree about Church, but man, I really like that guy. He is such a natural football player and has such a good head on his shoulders that he is the kind of player you just want on your team. But physically, he's a tick behind both Johnson and Wilcox.

Maybe I'm wrong and Barry plays well enough to keep the job, but I think Wilcox has the SS job by next season. He is built to play SS.

Going back to hating to let Church go though... I have said since we brought Monte Kiffin in that I wanted to convert Church to LB and let him play there. He would go from being a tick slow at safety to being one of the fastest LB's in the NFL. He's plenty enough of a hitter and has the instincts to play the position. Clearly, he would be an asset in coverage and in Kiffin's scheme he wouldn't be too small for the position. He even played some nickel LB for Rob Ryan and did well. I saw him stand up a guard on a run play. He is a naturally strong guy.

Just like Khaseem Green was converted to LB and Devonte Holloman was converted, Church would be a natural.

I know it isn't a popular idea, but that's what I'd like to see happen. Let Church play SS this season while Wilcox learns the ropes and Justin Durant play SOLB this year, and then next season let Wilcox move into the SS position and let Durant and Church compete at LB. It would make room for a supremely talented guy at SS (Wilcox) and give a guy who I'd like to see playing for Dallas a chance to compete for a starting spot on the defense.

Just what I'd like to see happen, although it probably never will.

I agree with you again. Not that i don't like Barry Church, just not athletic enough to be as effective as we need, i don't think. Not a bad scenario you have there..

..although i'd rather have Albright or Sims starting this season. ;)

:laugh2:
