Compares to Milton Williams

Williams 6'3" 284#

Williams
Pound for pound, Williams can match his toughness and strength with many of the interior defenders in this draft.

Overton is a slow-twitch end with impressive power and a consistently rugged demeanor.

Williams
Determining his best positional fit will be up to the team that drafts him, but he's a good football player who understands leverage and knows how to use his hands.

Overton
He has long arms and plays with the anchor/leverage that helps him secure his gap
  • Pops, resets and reloads hands to preserve contain positioning.
  • Hands are active and aggressive to displace tackle’s punch.

Williams
  • Play strength to displace block and make a play.
Overton
  • Tremendous hip power to uproot blockers.

The bar is so low with Guyton and Steele.
So do I just start at a C and say there's no where to go but up?

I think he's a good fit as a 4i in this defense. Don't really like his game, but hey, you have to adjust your expectations for Day 3 picks. You're just looking for guys who will stick on the roster at that point, and Overton could make it as a rotational run plugger.

I am grading a little easier in this draft because it is below par aggregate talent wise. In a normal year all these picks except Downs, get pushed down a half round to a round though.

Williams is a pretty poor comp because Williams had significantly more college production and was a premium athlete (9.9 RAS).
I believe its a good comp. I mostly looked at traits but production wise they look pretty similar other than the level of competition Alabama vs. Louisiana Tech. Williams was a DT and I don't believe Overton will be playing edge rusher but will be a 3-4 DE for the Cowboys so it's a little apples and oranges.

Overton
Tackles 42 solo 26 Sacks 4.0 TFL 6
Williams
Tackles 44 solo 21 Sacks 4.5 TFL 10

In terms of measurables they are the same height. Lawrence has much better arm length 33.25" vs 31.5" and had size 10 5/8" vs. 9.75"

You're right, Williams does have a better RAS score though.

Just saw this from Dane so I'll throw it in while I'm at it.

"Five of Dallas’ first six picks were spent on defense. Though Overton failed to live up to the early-round hype he had entering the season, he is a toolsy big man with gap-sound principles and long arms to own the point of attack."

B+ I like Overton as a player. I felt like he was one of the few guys on Bama's defensive line that had juice and you need to account for. Active on the line and solid in run defense. Good rotational piece to help keep our DL fresh throughout the game. Nice pickup for 4th rounder.

Williams wasn't an edge. He played some at 5T but he was still an interior player.

Overton was in college for an extra year. Through his junior season (3 years, like Williams) he had 6 TFLs and 3 sacks.

Overton has long arms and...that's basically it.
