Earlier this week, we graded each Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman’s performance through the first month of the season. Today, we are going to do the same with the secondary.

The Dallas secondary has had a lot of turnover in the last year. Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne, J.J. Wilcox and Barry Church — four players who were either starters or played significant time as backups — have been replaced by Jourdan Lewis, Chidobe Awuzie, Xavier Woods and Nolan Carroll, leaving many to worry that the secondary would experience a decline in play.

hrough Week 4, the Cowboys have the 21st-rated pass defense by Football Outsiders’ DVOA metric, which “measures a team’s efficiency by comparing success on every single play to a league average based on situation and opponent.” In 2016, the Cowboys had the same ranking (19th).

So while the Cowboys secondary has had issues in the first four weeks, it is performing at a similar level to what it did last year.

With that in mind, let’s look at how each defensive back on the Cowboys roster has performed thus far. It’s certainly a mixed bag.

Can't really argue the grades. Maybe a C+ for Scandrick? But he's been solid for the most part

Carroll was unfairly criticized in camp? LOL

Byron had a rough week 1, but has been great since then. I'd give him a B, at least.

Should grade the big problem the defensive coordinator

Agree. I am joining the "off Rod Marinelli bandwagon". I can tolerate 2 years of mediocrity or bend-don't-break defense if I end up with a solid defense, but I am running out of patience. The "no talent" excuse doesn't work for me as well. Who can name the 3 top defenders in the top 5 defenses in the NFL? Look what Tomsula doing with the Washington DLine in ONE off season.
I like RM. He is a lovable person, same as Leon Lett. But they are not showing me any progress, and are hiding behind the offense. Once the offense struggles they are exposed. There unit (DLine) is a disaster. Even those who argue about talent, good coaching can overcome that with schemes and technique teaching. They are not doing either.

Once season over, they need to leave in my opinion

Good to see Anthony Brown picking up where he left off last season.

Interesting to read that Jones struggles with physical receivers and has apparently been targeted because of it.
